What you would seeLo que verías
An open notebook lies flat, seen from directly above against a very dark edge. The spread is oriented vertically in the photograph, with the binding running horizontally across the middle and small tan stitches or ties at three points. The paper is cream, yellowed with age, slightly darker at the rounded corners and edges, and ruled throughout with thin blue vertical lines. Faint pencil numbers, 95 at the top and 94 at the bottom, appear along the right edge. In graphite, with loose, broken, sometimes doubled lines, six small human figures float across the blank paper. On the upper page, at the left, two heads with scribbled hair emerge among long strokes suggesting arms or water; near the top, a standing figure raises one arm; at the right, a seated figure bends its legs, with a small separate curve below. Nothing marks a shore, waves, or a horizon. On the lower page only two figures appear, set apart on the right: one turned away, drawn with a few torso lines, and one more finished woman facing forward, with hair, facial hints, sleeves, and crossed arms. The contrast between nearly abstract swimmers and this attentive portrait-like figure is striking. The scale is intimate: the figures occupy little space, surrounded by breathing room, like quick notations made before the pose disappeared.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the whole notebook, not at any single figure: the blue ruled lines and the central binding hold the spread together. Then follow the figures from top to bottom and look for arms, tilted heads, and cropped torsos. The most detailed woman at lower right changes the reading: among quick swimming gestures, someone suddenly faces us.
ContextContexto
This is pages 94 and 95, titled Swimming Figures, from a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, now Canada. It is dated 1905-10, is made in graphite, and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, which received it as a gift from Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast. The source notes that the book contains 69 pages of drawings, a diary largely devoted to the state of the artist's health, and a three-page discourse on the nature of genius and ideas. Prendergast is generally known for post-impressionist scenes of leisure; here that interest appears in the form of a private, rapid study. Exactly where these swimmers were observed is not known.

This is not a loose sheet: the same bound volume combines drawings with a diary largely about the artist's health and a three-page text on genius and ideas, according to the museum source.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What remains of swimming when water, landscape, and color are removed?¿Qué queda del acto de nadar cuando se quitan el agua, el paisaje y el color?
- Why might an artist place nearly abstract bathers and a more detailed portrait on the same spread?¿Por qué un artista pondría en la misma doble página bañistas casi abstractos y un retrato más detallado?
- Does the ruled notebook paper make these bodies seem more fragile, more playful, or more like writing?¿El papel rayado de cuaderno hace que estos cuerpos se vean más frágiles, más juguetones o más parecidos a escritura?

Look at this cream paper with thin vertical blue lines, yellowed at the corners with age. What holds me is how loose and faint the graphite strokes are, broken and sometimes doubled, as if the artist did not want to go over them. The horizontal binding with three leather-colored stitches cuts across the middle and holds everything together. I love the intimacy: six tiny figures floating in lots of empty space, with no shore or horizon, and the contrast between the almost abstract swimmers and the more finished woman with crossed arms below.

I see the sketchbook as an observation field. Pages 94 and 95 work like two stacked skies, separated by that binding that looks like an equator. On the upper page there are four scattered figures like a brief constellation: two heads with scribbled hair, one standing figure with an arm raised and another seated. Below, only two, isolated on the right side. Everything is done with minimal lines on ruled paper, with no waves or landmarks. It is a quick note of human movement, caught before the pose vanished.

It looks like someone drew super fast while watching people swim. On the top page there are four tiny people floating: two are just little heads with curly hair, another is standing with one arm up and another is sitting with bent legs. On the bottom page, on the right, there are two more: one seen from behind made with just a few lines and a lady facing forward with crossed arms who looks more finished. I like that the notebook has little blue lines and is held open in the middle with three light brown ties.
