What you would seeLo que verías
In the foreground a sheet of ruled notebook paper in warm creamy yellow fills the frame, with pale blue horizontal lines and a faded red vertical margin, its top and bottom edges softly worn and faintly stained with age. The page is densely covered in quick, slanted cursive handwriting in deep blue ink that runs from top to bottom, overlapping several pencil sketches. At the center sits a heavy scribbled knot of overlapping blue pen strokes, energetic and almost erased by its own density, and just below to the right a softer graphite sketch of a reclining or turned figure rendered with loose, shaded, curving lines. To the left a small sailboat appears, its sails broken into angular geometric planes and its hull hatched with graphite shading that suggests a reflection on water. Near the lower text a large irregular blot of spilled blue ink spreads with feathery edges and tiny splatters, partially drawn over. Even, documentary light reveals the fibrous texture of the paper, gentle creases, a small turned corner at the bottom right marked with the handwritten number 25, and places where ink has bled slightly. The book is isolated against a dark neutral background, emphasizing its intimate, handheld scale and everyday materiality.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow the blue handwriting from top to bottom as if reading a diary, then pause on the three sketches that break the text. Notice how the ink blot and layered scribbles merge writing and drawing into a single surface of lived time.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is page 25 from a bound sketchbook by American artist Maurice Prendergast, born in Newfoundland in 1858 and active until 1924, dated to about 1905 to 1910. The volume holds 69 pages of drawings, a diary largely concerned with the artist's health, and a three-page reflection on genius and ideas, executed in graphite. The visible entries are dated February and March 1910 and mention feeling unwell, bad days and news about someone named Jack, though the handwriting is difficult to transcribe precisely. The small sailboat and figure sketches are typical of his rapid on-the-spot notations. The full transcription and personal context of each line have not been published in detail.

Curious detailDato curioso
Prendergast's sketchbook served at once as drawing pad, health diary and essay notebook, a common artistic practice where private paper becomes a working laboratory rather than a finished artwork.

I focus on the materiality of this yellowish cream sheet with faded blue lines and a red margin. I look at the fibrous, slightly wrinkled paper, with worn edges and the fold on the lower right corner where the number 25 is written. The dark blue ink has bled and left a spilled stain with splatters that lives alongside the graphite sketches. That layering of fast cursive writing, drawing and accident speaks of daily use and fragility. Each stain and abrasion tells of time passing and how the notebook has been handled, stored and opened again.

I see this page as an intimate navigation chart. The small sailboat on the left, with sails divided into geometric planes and a shaded hull, seems to steer between blue lines that could be horizon or latitude. The dense scribble in the center is like a nervous constellation, a whirl of intersecting orbits, while the reclined graphite figure suggests someone watching from the deck. The handwritten entries, dated February and March 1910, are a log of bad days and pain, according to the context. Sailing and writing become ways of holding steady here.

This sheet looks like my notebook when I make a mistake and keep drawing anyway. There are blue ink letters going everywhere, a very tangled scribble in the middle that looks made with anger, and below a big blue blot that spilled and splattered. On the left there is a little boat with sails like small triangles and its reflection on the water, and on the right a person lying down drawn softly in pencil. I like that the number 25 is on the folded corner. You can tell it is a real notebook, used a lot and full of stories inside.
