What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a vertical page from an open sketchbook, photographed against a dark gray background. The paper is yellowed, slightly darkened at the edges, and ruled with very faint horizontal blue lines; at right, the edges of several stacked leaves are visible, and the binding peeks in at left. On this surface are three small graphite-gray sketches, separated by wide empty spaces and arranged in a descending column. At the top is little more than a woman's face seen from the front: closed eyes with pronounced lashes, a small mouth, hair pulled back, and a large hat or bow drawn with loose lines. In the center, a figure crouches or leans forward, seen from behind; the head is a scribbled oval, the back curves in a broad arc, and rapid strokes suggest arms, bent legs, and a support on the ground. At the bottom is the most complete figure: a person standing, from behind and in three-quarter view, one hand on a hip, wearing a dress or loose clothing to the knees, with long legs and feet barely hinted at by a curve. The line is quick and irregular, with no detailed shading, like notes taken on the fly. In the lower right corner, “101” appears in small ink.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the ample empty space: the figures float on the lined page without a setting. Then compare their levels of finish, from the face at the top to the more complete standing figure at the bottom. Notice how a few curved lines are enough to suggest posture, clothing, and movement.

ContextContexto

According to The Cleveland Museum of Art, this is page 101 of a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, now Canada. Dated 1905–10 and drawn in graphite, it belongs to a bound volume containing 69 pages of drawings, a diary largely devoted to the state of the artist's health, and a three-page discourse on the nature of genius and ideas. The museum received it as a gift of Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast. The three figures are not identified, and it is not known whether they portray specific models; they are probably quick observational studies, though the source does not confirm this.

Curious detailDato curioso

The page is numbered “101,” even though the source describes only 69 pages of drawings: the same volume also contains a diary and a written reflection, so its pagination extends beyond the drawings.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the support before the drawing. I see yellowed paper, darker at the edges, with very faint horizontal blue lines and the book spine on the left. The graphite is light, quick, without detailed shading. This page 101 belongs to a volume of 69 pages dated between 1905 and 1910. I am interested in how ruled paper, meant for writing, here holds three minimal figures and leaves a lot of empty space breathing around them.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I am drawn to constellations of isolated points and here I see three. At the top a frontal face with closed eyes, in the middle a hunched back seen from behind, at the bottom a standing figure with a hand on the hip. They are aligned in a vertical column on yellowish paper, separated by emptiness like stars on a chart. The number 101 in the corner works as a coordinate to locate them inside the sketchbook.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone secretly sketched three people without them noticing. The one on top is just a little face with closed eyes and a big bun, the middle one is crouched as if looking for something on the ground and the bottom one is standing with a hand on the waist. I like that there is a lot of empty space and the little blue lines of the notebook show through behind. At the bottom it says 101, like a page counting game.
