What you would seeLo que verías

An open sketchbook is seen from front against a dark gray background, photographed as a single object. Two aged, cream-colored pages occupy almost the entire image, joined by a vertical stitched seam at the center, with slightly darkened and worn edges. The number 5 is handwritten at the upper right corner. Across both pages runs a loose graphite street scene, drawn with quick, broken, uneven lines and no color or shading. In the foreground, the lower half is largely empty: a wide street suggested only by a few curved lines at the bottom, a zigzag curb, and a tiny isolated parenthesis-like mark. In the middle ground on the left stands a tall house with a very pointed gable, slit windows, and a steep roof; smaller buildings and sketchy vegetation flank it. On the right page there are more houses with pitched roofs, chimneys, and small oval or vertical windows, a low fence, and two tiny figures, one apparently on a bicycle near the center and another by the fence. Above them rises a large tree whose canopy is a tangle of energetic scribbles. The light is even and flat, emphasizing the texture of the old paper and the gray softness of the graphite.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, follow the empty road from the bottom of the spread toward the houses, as if you were entering the scene on foot. Then notice how a few vertical strokes become windows and how the scribbled tree balances the pointed gable on the left. The tiny figures, almost lost among the buildings, change the scale and turn an architectural study into an inhabited street.

ContextContexto

This open spread belongs to a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, now Canada, dated 1905–10. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann, and Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts, inside the cover. This page, titled Street Scene, is probably a quick note made during his stay in the area, although the exact street depicted is not known. The sketchbook was gifted by Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast.

Charles E. Prendergast.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising observation: more than half of the double page is almost empty paper representing the street, yet that blank space is what gives the drawing its sense of light, distance, and quiet.

I pause on the cream paper, now darkened at the edges and worn with time. These are two pages joined by a central stitch, photographed in even light that reveals every fiber and every soft gray graphite line. I’m interested in what’s missing: the lower half almost empty, the street barely suggested with zigzags, the graphite texture with no shading. At the top right, the handwritten number 5 reminds me this is part of a larger sketchbook, 72 pages long, that has survived for over a hundred years.

I see this drawing like a map of earthly constellations. The sharp-gabled houses with chimneys are like peaks cutting the horizon, and the large tree on the right, made of energetic scribbles, is an expanding nebula. Below, the empty street is a blank space, like the night sky waiting to be filled. And in between, two tiny dots: a figure on a bicycle and another by the fence, lonely planets moving slowly in a quiet, everyday orbit around Rockport.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone drew really fast before they forgot! The street at the bottom is almost empty, just some zigzag lines and a little mark like a parenthesis. The houses have super pointy roofs like in a fairy tale and tiny, tiny little windows. My favorite part is the big tree that looks made of lots of curls and scribbles. If you look closely, there are two super tiny people: one is riding a bike and another is by a fence. They’re as small as little ants!
