As a conservator I focus on the support: ivory paper from 1905 to 1910, slightly yellowed at the edges with soft wear at the corners, open against a dark gray background. I am drawn to the pencil annotations, «Yellow blue» and «blue sea with vermillion or indian red», which serve as chromatic memory for the studio, not decoration. The central gutter and stacked pages show a sketchbook used outdoors.

As an amateur astronomer I read the landscape through its light. The washed sky in pale blues and grays with a peach band on the horizon tells me the time of day and the coastal atmosphere of Cape Ann in Massachusetts. At the center the intense blue of the sea contrasts with ochres and vermilion orange of the rocks, an almost complementary vibration that Prendergast noted to remember. The two small white sails on the blue serve as reference points to gauge the breadth of the cove under that diffuse and luminous light.

This sketchbook looks like a vacation diary! On top there is a painting of a super blue sea, like a giant swimming pool, with orange and purple rocks and little green trees on the sides. There are two tiny white boats floating. Below he left lots of white space and wrote his color ideas in pencil, like secret clues. You can see the fold of the book in the middle and the little pages stacked. I imagine the artist sitting in front of the sea, painting super fast before the light goes away.
