What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal page from a bound sketchbook, photographed with a narrow strip of the facing page at the top and a dark background around the edges. The paper is off-white, yellowed with age, especially along the lower and right margins, with small brown spots near the upper seam and faint smudging in the empty areas. The stitched binding runs along the top. Near the lower right corner appears a small handwritten number, '99'. In the lower center, occupying barely a third of the sheet, four seated female figures are drawn in loose, rapid graphite lines. They seem to be seen from behind or in three-quarter view, without defined faces. Their heads are suggested with circles and curved strokes that evoke buns, hats, or gathered hair. Long dresses spread out at the base like bells, with folds, sleeves, and arms indicated by overlapping contours, repetitions, and unfinished lines. Some strokes are darker and others barely touch the paper. The space around them is completely blank: no ground, landscape, furniture, or shadow. The contrast between the pale, aged paper and the gray, gestural line makes the group seem light, temporary, and observed in a matter of seconds.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the wide expanse of blank paper, then let the four figures emerge from just a few lines. Notice that they are mostly seen from behind, without faces, so attention shifts to posture, hats, and dresses. The loose, overlapping strokes change the reading: these are less individual portraits than a quick record of a group caught in passing.

ContextContexto

This is page 99 of a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, now part of Canada. Dated 1905–10 and drawn in graphite, it belongs to a bound volume held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, a gift of Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast. According to the museum, the sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside cover, Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts. It is not known exactly who these women were or what they were doing; they were probably observed during a stay in the area.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the paper before the figures. It is an off white that yellows toward the edges, with small brownish spots near the top binding and soft gray smudges in the empty areas. You can see the sewn binding at the top and the handwritten number 99 at the lower right. The graphite varies in pressure, some strokes darker and others barely touching the surface, with broken and overlapping lines that suggest folds of long dresses. I am interested in how the aging of the support dialogues with the lightness of the mark.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see four presences like a small system in the middle of a vast emptiness. They sit at the lower center of the page, taking up barely a third, surrounded by pale paper with no ground or landscape. The heads are simple circles with curves for buns or hats, and the dresses flare like bells. The quick, repeated lines remind me of orbits sketched freehand, trying to capture a fleeting motion. I like to think of this group as a quiet little constellation observed in a few seconds and left as is, with no shadow or extra detail.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like four ladies sitting together seen from behind. They have no face, just a little circle for the head and a bun or hat. Their dresses are long and flare like bells, with lots of little lines crossing. I like that the drawing is tiny in the middle of a big empty page, as if they were sketched really fast before they left. The paper looks old and yellowish, and at the bottom right there is a little number that says 99. I would give them names and colors.
