What you would seeLo que verías
An open sketchbook is shown straight-on against a dark gray background, its two pages of cream paper slightly yellowed with age. The central seam divides the image into two nearly equal halves. The drawing, made with loose strokes of black and gray graphite, occupies mostly the left-hand page and only spills into the upper part of the right-hand one. In the foreground, just left of center, stands a tree whose trunk splits into several thick branches that open upward and to the right, crossing even the seam of the book. Its canopy is not filled in: it is suggested by wavy, broken, zigzag lines forming irregular clouds of foliage. Some branches are reinforced with thicker, darker strokes, almost like secondary trunks. Behind the tree, houses with pitched roofs are hinted at. On the left there is a small, schematic silhouette; on the right, already on the other page, appears the roof of another house with a chimney and a tiny rectangular window barely marked. The lower part of the right-hand page is left almost empty, with very faint, nearly erased traces of other lines. At the upper right the number “107” can be read. Along the right edge, spots of color from other pages peek out — greens, pinks and yellows — contrasting with the restraint of the pencil.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the tree trunk and follow its branches as they cross the center fold onto the right-hand page. Then look for the houses half-hidden behind it: the drawing only makes sense when you complete it in your mind. Finally, notice the almost empty lower half of page 107, which gives the sketch its sense of interruption and lightness.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is the double-page spread 106 and 107 from the sketchbook known as Sketchbook – The Granite Shore Hotel, Rockport, by Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, now Canada. It is dated 1905–10 and drawn in graphite. The source notes that the sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann, and that Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts, inside the cover. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast. These data do not tell us the exact day of this sketch, nor whether the houses depict a specific identifiable place; they were probably a motif observed during his stay.

Curious detailDato curioso
The surprise is visual: the tree does not respect the binding. Its branches cross from page 106 onto page 107, while the right-hand page below that remains almost blank, as if the artist had looked up, drawn only the top of the scene, and moved on.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How much can we recognize of a landscape when only its essential structure is drawn?¿Cuánto podemos reconocer de un paisaje cuando solo se dibuja su estructura esencial?
- Why might an artist let a drawing continue across two pages and then leave so much blank space?¿Por qué un artista dejaría que un dibujo continúe en dos páginas y luego dejara tanto espacio en blanco?

I linger on the creamy paper yellowed with time and how the graphite rests on it. I see the sketchbook opened at its central seam and the tree with its divided trunk spreading across both pages with loose zigzag strokes to suggest foliage. I notice the contrast between the darker reinforced lines and the faint erased traces below. The number 107 at the top right and the spots of color peeking at the edge remind me this is a living, well-used notebook.

This sketch makes me think of constellations drawn in pencil. The tree has no solid crown, only clouds of wavy and broken lines connecting imaginary stars, as if the artist were mapping the sky. The gabled houses behind look like tiny observatories. I love how the drawing crosses the sketchbook gutter like an orbit that ignores borders. The dark gray background makes the light paper glow like a bright window at night.

It looks like someone drew a giant tree with lots of arms stretching out to tickle the little houses behind it. They did not draw every leaf, just zigzag scribbles like fluffy clouds. It makes me laugh that the tree is bigger than the houses and crosses the middle of the sketchbook as if it does not fit. At the bottom there are almost invisible little lines, like erased secrets. At the top it says 107 and on the side you can see tiny hidden color spots from other drawings.
