What you would seeLo que verías

On creamy, slightly yellowed paper with the sketchbook’s top edge and binding visible, a rapid graphite sketch spreads across most of the surface. In the foreground, five seated figures form a dense cluster, seen from three-quarter back and profile views, rendered with tangled, looping and overlapping strokes that suggest hats, bonnets and full dresses with voluminous skirts. Faces are mere ovals scribbled over, without distinct features; one figure raises a hand toward the face. Beneath the bodies, loose lines and pooled marks hint at rocks or uneven ground. Behind them, more ethereal sketches of standing silhouettes, trees and undulating foliage are made with zigzags and airy loops that fade into the background. At upper right, the word Laneville is handwritten in light cursive. The light is even with no strong shadows; the texture is nervous and agile, with variable graphite pressure leaving darker, reworked patches beside barely touched outlines, conveying the immediacy of a small-scale outdoor study made in the moment.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the seated group in the foreground and trace the tangled lines of each head to separate one figure from the next. Then notice how the background grows more abstract and airy, where strokes are at once people, trees and breeze. Finally look at the word Laneville at upper right: it anchors the scribble to a specific place and turns an anonymous sketch into a travel memory.

ContextContexto

This image is page 062 of a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (American, born in Newfoundland, now Canada, 1858–1924), dated 1905–10 according to the Cleveland Museum of Art record. The bound volume holds 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, and inside the cover the artist wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport. The inscription Laneville names a coastal village in Gloucester, near Rockport, where Prendergast often sketched everyday outdoor scenes. The sitters are not identified; the drawing is a quick study, probably made on the spot, typical of his practice of capturing groups on beaches and in parks.

Curious detailDato curioso

Maurice Prendergast was associated with The Eight, the group that challenged American academic art in the early 20th century, and his Cape Ann sketchbooks are seen as a laboratory where he worked out the compositions for his celebrated ornamental beach scenes.

  1. What makes you still read these abstract scribbles as people?¿Qué te hace reconocer como personas a estos trazos tan abstractos?
  2. How does knowing this was drawn quickly outdoors, perhaps in minutes, change how you see it?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del dibujo saber que fue hecho rápidamente al aire libre, tal vez en pocos minutos?
  3. Why might the artist need to write the place name on such a minimal sketch?¿Por qué crees que el artista necesitaba escribir el nombre del lugar en un boceto tan sintético?

I linger on that cream paper now yellowed with age and how the graphite clings to its fiber. I see shifting pressure, reworked strokes darkening skirts and hats, and barely touched areas where foliage turns into air. The five seated figures form a knot of circular, overlapping lines, with faces scribbled out and no detail. Behind, standing silhouettes fade away. At the upper right, the light cursive inscription Laneville anchors the sketch and reminds me this is a living sketchbook, made outdoors.

This sketch makes me think of constellations. The five seated figures are like a tight cluster in the foreground, seen from behind and in profile, with hats and full skirts hinted by tangled loops. Behind, other silhouettes and zigzag trees are fainter distant stars, diffuse. There are no strong shadows, just even light like a midday sky. The word Laneville at the top is our celestial label, the name of the coastal neighborhood near Rockport where Maurice Prendergast hunted for everyday scenes between 1905 and 1910.

It looks like someone drew really fast while people tried not to move! I see five little people sitting close together, with funny hats and huge skirts made of lots of scribbles. Their faces are just ovals with scratches and one raises a hand. Below there are rocks with loose lines. Behind there are more standing people and little trees with loopy springs. At the upper right it says Laneville in pretty handwriting. Everything is in gray pencil on yellowish paper and it feels like a secret drawing made outside, at the beach.
