What you would seeLo que verías

An open sketchbook lies flat against a dark gray background, seen from directly above. Its two cream-colored pages, yellowed and slightly stained at the edges, fill almost the whole image; the number 181 is handwritten at the upper right corner. The graphite line is dark gray, loose, and very fast, with overlapping strokes of uneven pressure. On the left page there are only three drawn zones separated by large blanks: near the middle, a thin, wavy horizontal band suggests a distant shoreline; lower down, a tiny curved mark floats alone; and at the bottom, frantic zigzags and loops suggest grasses or shoreline plants, cut off by the page edge. The right page is much fuller. In its upper third, a small boat with a curved hull and two vertical masts sits before horizontal strokes and a dense, scribbled tree on the right. Below it, diagonal masses with heavy shading evoke rocks sloping toward the water, and the lower right corner is a tangle of spirals and zigzags for vegetation. There are no people, no color, and almost no detail: the forms emerge only through rhythm, density, and empty paper.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the contrast between the two pages: the left one breathes, the right one crowds. Then look for the small sailboat with two masts on page 181; once you find it, the scribbles below settle into shore, rocks, and plants. Finally, return to the almost-empty center of the left page, where the blank paper does the work of sky and water.

ContextContexto

This is an open spread, pages 180 and 181, from a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, now Canada, dated 1905-10 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to the museum, the bound volume contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann, and Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts, inside the cover. It is probably a group of quick studies made while looking at that coast, although the exact day and spot for this spread are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although this spread is only in graphite, the same sketchbook holds 9 watercolors among its 72 pages of pencil drawings of Cape Ann.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How much landscape can a few quick lines hold before it stops being recognizable?¿Cuánto paisaje cabe en unas cuantas líneas rápidas antes de dejar de reconocerse?
  2. Why might an artist leave one page nearly empty and fill the facing page so densely?¿Por qué un artista dejaría una página casi vacía y llenaría tanto la de enfrente?
  3. Do these drawings feel like finished works, private notes, or something in between?¿Estos dibujos se sienten como obra terminada, como nota privada o como algo intermedio?

I pause on that yellowish cream paper with its age stains along the edges, and on how the dark gray graphite sits differently depending on pressure. The left page is mostly empty, with just a wavy strip for the distant shore and some zigzag grasses at the bottom. On the right the line gets denser: the little two-masted boat, the heavily scribbled tree, and the rocks with strong shading. It is a quick study, unfinished, and that is what makes it valuable: you can see Prendergast testing rhythms with pure line.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this sketchbook as a star chart. On the left page there is a lot of sky, meaning a lot of empty paper, with just three clusters of marks floating like stars: the horizon line, a small curved tick, and the loops of plants. On the right, the lines gather like a dense Milky Way: the two-masted boat is crisp at the top, and below the diagonal rocks and the tangle of spirals form a graphite nebula. It is calm observation, noting with minimal means what lay before the sea at Rockport between 1905 and 1910.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone was bored and drew super quickly with a pencil. On the left page there is almost nothing, just a few little lines like faraway waves and some curls and zigzags at the bottom that are the shore plants. On the right page there is more stuff and I like it better: at the top there is a little boat with two sticks for masts, next to a fuzzy tree made of lots of scribbles, and below some big slanted rocks. Everything is made with gray lines and leaves a lot of white space to imagine the water.

  1. #1

On the right page, near the top, what little boat with how many vertical masts appears in front of the scribbled tree?

    HintPista

Look at the upper third of page 181, to the left of the tree with the dense scribbled crown.

  2. #2

What yellowish color is the paper on both pages and what number is seen in the upper right corner?

    HintPista

Notice the background of the open sketchbook and the top right corner.

  3. #3

How many drawn areas are there on the left page, separated by large empty spaces?

    HintPista

Count the groups of gray lines on page 180: the wavy strip, the small curved mark, and the scribbles at the bottom.
