What you would seeLo que verías

An open sketchbook is shown frontally, its two facing pages filling the frame against a dark gray ground. The paper is a warm, aged cream with slightly darkened edges and faint smudging, its surface matte and softly fibrous. A continuous graphite sketch spans the gutter, executed in loose, energetic, broken strokes with zigzag hatching and sketchy shading. In the foreground a horizontal band suggests a street or sidewalk, marked by a post fence and low shrubs drawn with crossed lines and dense scribbles. Behind it, lush vegetation is rendered as tangled masses of looping, jagged lines that partly obscure the buildings. In the middle and background, three or four two-story houses rise with gabled roofs, upright chimneys, and small rectangular windows barely indicated. On the right edge a tall, narrow vertical structure anchors the composition. The light is even and diffuse, the graphite ranging from pale silver-gray to deeper soft black in accented areas, with no strong shadows. The scale is intimate, a field note, with the sewn spine clearly visible in the center and a small handwritten 95 in the lower right corner. Erasures, reworkings, and faint smudges convey immediacy and the artist’s hand moving quickly on site.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the horizontal fence line in the foreground, then move upward into the tangled foliage and the row of houses. Linger on the overlapping zigzags that build the greenery and see how a few rectangles suggest windows and chimneys. Notice how the sketch crosses the central fold to create a single panoramic view.

ContextContexto

Work by Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland and linked to Post-Impressionism and the Boston School. This spread belongs to his sketchbook The Dells, No. 127, pages 94 and 95, titled Village Street and dated about 1919–1921. According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, where the bound volume is held as a Gift of Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast, the sketchbook contains 59 pages of graphite drawings and 16 watercolors made at various locations on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, a coastal area the artist frequented late in life. The drawing captures a village street with houses and foliage in a concise, on-the-spot manner typical of his graphic notes.

Curious detailDato curioso

While Prendergast is best known for his brightly colored watercolors of beaches and promenades, his Cape Ann sketchbooks reveal his working process in graphite, using rapid shorthand studies that he later developed into more finished studio compositions.

  1. How does the quick, unfinished line change your sense of place compared to a sharp photograph?¿Qué te hace sentir el trazo rápido y sin detalles frente a una fotografía nítida del mismo lugar?
  2. What happens to a landscape when foliage is suggested by scribbles rather than detailed leaves?¿Cómo cambia la idea de paisaje cuando la vegetación se dibuja con garabatos en vez de hojas definidas?
  3. Why might an artist keep such a brief field note in a bound volume for years?¿Por qué un artista guardaría un apunte tan breve en un cuaderno encuadernado y lo conservaría por años?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the creamy yellowish paper and its edges darkened by time, with soft stains that speak of its age. I look at the loose, zigzagging graphite, the reworkings and smudges that reveal a hasty field sketch. The central gutter joins two pages into a continuous drawing where vegetation wraps around the houses. As a conservator I value its matte, porous fragility and how the diffuse graphite light converses with the pale background without heavy fixative.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this sketch as a map of earthly constellations. The broken, sketchy lines are orbits of quick observation, as if Prendergast were charting the sky but at ground level. The three or four houses with straight chimneys are urban beacons under a diffuse, shadowless light, wrapped in nebulae of shrubs made of dense scribbles. The street in the foreground is the horizon from which we take our measurements. The penciled number 95 is our coordinate to find this corner of Cape Ann again.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone drew really fast while walking through their town. I see wobbly houses with pointy roofs and chimneys like little sticks, hiding among lots of trees made of tangled scribbles. Up front there is a fence and bushes with doodles. I like that you can see the open book in the middle and that in the corner it says 95, like a secret. Everything is in gray and black on old cookie colored paper, with no colors, but it feels like a calm day.
