What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows an open sketchbook photographed straight on, against a narrow dark gray background visible around the edges. Two pages of cream-colored paper, slightly yellowed with age, fill almost the entire frame; the central binding divides the view and casts a thin vertical shadow. The left page seems nearly empty at first: it holds very faint smudges, ghostly lines that probably show through or were offset from another sheet, and small brownish marks near the margins. Close to the binding, however, a vertical column of graphite scribbles rises up the page. On the right page the drawing is denser and more animated. With quick, loose, interlacing lines, the artist suggests a group of human figures without detailing faces or hands: round or oval heads, barely hinted hats, torsos and skirts merging into repeated curves. Near the bottom, among the forms, a handwritten word seems to read “blue,” and below it, in slanted script, “yellow jacket.” The number “75” appears in the lower right corner. The light is even, with no harsh glare, revealing the matte texture of the paper and the uneven pressure of the pencil.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First notice how empty the left page looks, then move toward the binding, where the drawing begins to gather. On the right page, do not look for finished bodies: follow the round heads and looping curves until a crowd emerges. Finally, read the handwritten color notes at the bottom; they change the gray lines into a scene imagined in color.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is pages 74 and 75 of a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, now Canada. Dated to about 1919–1921 and catalogued under the title The Dells, No. 127, the volume contains 59 pages of graphite drawings and 16 watercolors made at various locations on Cape Ann, Massachusetts. These two pages, done only in graphite, record figures with color notations. It is not known exactly who the people were or the precise spot represented; they were probably quick observations made outdoors, later useful as studies for other works.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although the drawing contains no color at all, the artist wrote down the colors he was seeing — among them, “yellow jacket” — turning words into a temporary palette for a future painting.

I pause to look at what time has left on the paper. These two cream pages, slightly yellowed, show their age in small brownish spots and in those ghostly traces that show through. I am interested in the contrast between the left page, almost empty, and the right one, full of quick interlaced graphite lines. The handwritten notes that say blue and yellow jacket are key: the artist did not paint here, he just wrote down the color to remember later. It is a fragile, intimate note, made to be used later in the studio.

When I look at the right page, I think about how we record what we can barely make out. Those round heads and hinted hats in graphite cluster together like a constellation of figures, with no faces or hands, just repeating curves. At the bottom, the words blue and yellow jacket are like observation labels, just as when I note the color of a star so I do not forget it. The number 75 in the corner organizes this paper sky. It is a quick record, taken outdoors, to capture a crowd in motion.

It looks like someone drew a lot of people together really fast. On the right page there are many crossing lines and little round heads with tiny hats. They have no eyes or mouth, but you can tell they are people. I like that at the bottom it says blue and yellow jacket, as if the artist was thinking out loud about what colors to use later. The left page is almost blank, just with little spots. And at the bottom it says 75, like in my school notebook.
