What you would seeLo que verías

An open sketchbook is seen straight on, photographed against a flat dark-grey ground that frames the cream pages. The volume fills almost the entire image, with its worn, darkened central spine running vertically and dividing pages 76 and 77; a tiny '77' appears at the lower right corner. The paper is off-white, aged and slightly irregular at the edges, with light foxing and pressure marks near the binding. Everything is drawn in graphite: loose, rapid, overlapping strokes in pale grey to near-black, with no color and almost no shading built up patiently. Across both pages spreads a single landscape. In the upper left, light lines suggest rooftops and a house; near the center and upper right, thin trunks rise into scribbled, angular treetops. Dense zigzag hatching on the right suggests a great bush or bank of foliage. In the foreground and middle ground, figures are barely separated from the vegetation: small oval or circular heads, some darkened solidly, a few hat-like shapes, swirling lines for bodies, skirts or legs, and brief marks for feet at the bottom. Gestures and identities are unreadable. The energy is sketchy and crowded below, airier above, giving an impression of people gathered or strolling outdoors, caught in a few minutes of looking.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look across the whole double page as if it were a single landscape, then let your eye find the small dark circles: that is where the people are. Compare the calmer upper zone, with trees and rooftops, to the tangle below, where bodies and foliage merge. Notice how the central spine does not divide the scene; the drawing runs straight across it.

ContextContexto

These are pages 76 and 77 of sketchbook No. 127, The Dells, by Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, now Canada. The Cleveland Museum of Art dates it to around 1919-1921 and describes a bound volume containing 59 pages of graphite drawings and 16 watercolors made at various locations on Cape Ann, Massachusetts. It is a working sketch, not a finished work, probably made quickly outdoors. The exact location of this particular double-page view is not recorded, nor are the figures identified. The credit line records a gift from Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: among dozens of grey, looping strokes, what most clearly turns the scribbles into people are a few small head-circles filled in almost black on the right-hand page.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How much information does a drawing need before we start seeing people, rather than lines?¿Cuánta información necesita un dibujo para que empecemos a ver personas y no solo líneas?
  2. What might Prendergast have wanted to remember from this scene: the place, the crowd, or the movement itself?¿Qué querría recordar Prendergast de esta escena: el lugar, la multitud o el movimiento mismo?
  3. How does knowing this is a private sketchbook page, not a finished work, change the way you judge it?¿Cómo cambia tu juicio al saber que es una página íntima de un cuaderno y no una obra terminada?

I linger on that off-white and cream paper, with uneven edges and faint stains that show its age. The central binding is worn and darkened, and down on the right you can spot the small 77. I notice the pressure marks near the spine and how the graphite shifts from pale gray to near black in fast, overlapping strokes. It is a working note, not a finished piece, clearly made quickly outdoors, with no color and no careful shading. Still, the paper holds up and lets us see the immediate gesture.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this sketchbook as if I were looking at constellations. Those heads are little circles and ovals, some heavily darkened, like moons or loose planets among the vegetation. The thin trunks with angular scribbled crowns remind me of hand-drawn star charts. The upper part breathes, the lower part turns dense and restless, like a crowded sky. Everything is in graphite on wide-open cream pages, with the seam in the middle. It is a quick note of people strolling outdoors.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone drew super super fast, as if they did not want people to leave! I see many little circles that are heads, some with hats, and tiny lines for legs and feet. The trees are skinny sticks with lots of scribbly tops and on the right there is a zigzag bush that I really like. The sketchbook is open right in the middle and you can see the dark line where it folds. There are no colors, just light and strong gray pencil. I imagine everyone is walking together.
