An irregular fragment of thin cotton cloth is shown flat against a plain, pale grey woven backing that fills the whole background. The fragment is roughly triangular or polygonal: its longest edge runs diagonally from the upper left toward the lower right point, while the bottom edge is straighter and the left side is uneven. All its edges are frayed, with short loose threads and small notches. Its palette is muted, in dusty brown, mauve-brown, beige, and off-white. A broad dark diagonal field crosses the center. Along the upper band runs a repeating border of small diamonds inside squares, edged with dots. Within the dark area appear light floral rosettes, scrolling tendrils, dots, and small leaf-like shapes. At lower left is a large medallion, round but tilted, containing four dark oval forms around a central diamond with a small cross. Near the bottom and lower right there are holes, thinned translucent patches, and torn areas where the backing shows through. The weave is fine and slightly grainy, the surface matte, and the light even, without strong shadows. The scale appears small and intimate, like a preserved cutting rather than a complete garment.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First notice the diagonal band: it organizes the fragment and gives a sense of the original cloth's geometry. Then move to the large medallion at lower left and the rosettes, and compare their sharp outlines with the holes and fraying around them. That contrast between an ordered pattern and a worn material changes the piece from decoration into evidence of use and survival.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a textile fragment from India, dated to the 1300s, by an unknown maker, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is cotton worked with drawn resist, painted mordant, and dyeing. In that period, India was widely known for producing painted and dyed cotton cloth, traded over long distances. The specific place of manufacture, original use, owner, and full form of this textile are not known. What survives is probably only part of a larger patterned fabric, later cut down or damaged over time.

Curious detailDato curioso

The pattern was not simply printed on a finished surface: the resist and mordant were applied before or during dyeing to control where the color would take, so the pale design is partly created by preventing or directing the dye.

I focus on how fragile this piece is. It is just a thin cotton fragment with frayed edges, holes and worn translucent areas, laid on a pale grey support. I notice the upper border of tiny diamonds inside squares edged with dots, the wide dark diagonal band with light rosettes and curling tendrils, and that tilted round medallion with four dark ovals. You can see the resist and painted mordant dyeing technique. I think about how to preserve it while still showing its history of use and time.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this fragment as a small portable sky. The wide dark diagonal band feels like a dusty Milky Way where pale rosettes float like stars, with dots and curling tendrils like orbits. The upper border of diamonds inside squares edged with dots looks like a measuring scale for the heavens. The tilted medallion with four ovals around a central diamond makes me think of a planetary system with moons. Knowing it is a 14th century cotton from India that moved along long distance trade routes makes me picture caravans watching the same sky.

It looks like a little fairy tablecloth that got torn. All the edges are frayed with little holes where you can see the grey background underneath. On top there is a row of tiny diamonds with dots and in the middle a dark brown band with white little flowers and curly tails. I love the wonky circle with four ovals that looks like a face or a decorated cookie. I imagine it was once a huge cloth and now it is a tiny soft treasure we have to take great care of.
