What you would seeLo que verías
Against a plain, light canvas backing, an irregular textile fragment with frayed, torn edges is displayed. Only a few inches across, it preserves two standing frontal figures, nearly identical, with oval faces, large round eyes, broad headdresses or crowns, and circular medallions at the chest. They wear long tunics with vertical folds and fringed hems, posed in rigid symmetry. The palette is a muted, dusty orange-tan for the figures against a dark gray-brown ground, creating a two-tone patterned effect. The weave texture is visible and slightly coarse, characteristic of aged compound twill silk, with fading, loose threads and a vertical seam visible on the left side. Light catches the worn surface, highlighting thin areas and discoloration. Around the figures a faint circular border remains, filled with small geometric and stylized vegetal motifs, now broken off. To the far left, a small additional scrap of a neighboring roundel is visible, indicating the design was once part of a repeated series.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the two central faces and their mirrored gaze, then trace the faint circular frame that once enclosed them. Notice the torn edges and the extra scrap on the left that hints at a larger repeating pattern.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a segmentum, a roundel appliqué sewn onto a tunic, dated to the late 700s to early 800s and linked to Syria and to Akhmim in Egypt. The technique is compound twill in silk and the maker is unknown, likely a workshop production. In this period, figured silk roundels circulated widely in the eastern Mediterranean in late antique and early Islamic contexts, often featuring stylized human or animal figures. No specific archaeological findspot is recorded. The museum credits the piece as a gift of Heeramaneck Galleries.

Curious detailDato curioso
Such tunic segmenta were sewn onto shoulders or knees as status markers, and compound twill silk required an advanced drawloom, a technology that signals long-distance craft knowledge in the 8th century.

I focus on what time has left visible: the frayed edges, the loose threads and that vertical seam on the left that shows how this segmentum was once sewn onto a tunic. It is a compound twill in silk, with that muted orangey ochre on a dark greenish grey ground that is now quite faded. The coarse weave and the broken circular medallion remind us this is a fragment, not the whole piece. Mounting it on light linen protects its fragility without hiding its wear.

I see this medallion as if it were an ancient constellation enclosed in a circle. Two frontal, symmetrical figures with large round eyes like moons, wide crowns and circular necklaces, wearing tunics with vertical folds. Everything is organized inside a geometric and vegetal frame, like an orbit. That this silk fragment traveled between Syria and Akhmim in Egypt in the late eighth to early ninth century makes me think of trade routes and star maps shared across the eastern Mediterranean.

They look like twins with huge eyes! Both are standing very straight, with their crowns and little round necklaces, and their long dresses with fringes at the bottom. The orange color stands out against the dark background and if you get close you can see all the tiny threads and broken parts. I like that the circle around them is incomplete, like a puzzle with missing pieces. On the left you can glimpse another medallion, so there must have been many more repeated on the clothing.
