What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a full page from a bound sketchbook, seen frontally against a dark background. The paper is greyish blue, with a grainy texture and irregular, worn, slightly darkened edges. On the left, the binding is visible: layers of aged leaves in cream, beige, and greenish tones, joined by exposed stitching. A narrow strip of ochre paper or board appears at the right edge. At the centre, drawn in soft strokes of black chalk, is a half-length gentleman with no facial features. His head is an almost empty oval, barely sketched, with a faint vertical line and two small ears. He wears an open coat, a long waistcoat, and a cravat or stock tied at the neck. His right arm is bent, with the hand resting at his waist and the fingers indicated in quick lines. His left arm hangs down; that hand, open with long fingers, is also left unfinished. Shading is concentrated on the right side of the torso in parallel diagonal hatching that suggests folds, volume, and heavy cloth. Towards the bottom, the drawing dissolves into a few loose, curving lines. In the lower left corner is written “54”. There are small yellowish stains and almost imperceptible marks across the paper.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the empty oval of the head, then move down to the carefully shaded clothing. Notice how the hands, though barely sketched, establish the pose. Finally, look at the binding and the page number to remember that this is a working page, not a finished portrait.

ContextContexto

This is page 54 of the Verona Sketchbook, dated 1760 and attributed to the Italian artist Francesco Lorenzi (1723–1787), according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held with credit to the John L. Severance Fund. It is drawn in black chalk with white heightening, a technique well suited to tinted paper: the dark strokes model the form and the light touches create highlights. The identity of the gentleman is not known. The sheet was probably a study of pose and dress rather than a finished portrait, as suggested by the blank face and the summary lines in the lower half.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: the coat receives far more attention than the person — the face is an empty oval, yet the fingers, cuffs, and folds of the garment are already shaping the sitter's presence.

  1. Why might an artist study the clothing and posture so carefully while leaving the face completely blank?¿Por qué un artista estudiaría con tanto cuidado la ropa y la postura, dejando el rostro completamente en blanco?
  2. What does the contrast between the finished hatching and the loose lower lines reveal about the act of drawing?¿Qué revela el contraste entre el sombreado acabado y las líneas sueltas de abajo sobre el acto de dibujar?

What interests me most about this page 54 is how the material tells the story. I see the blue-gray grained paper with irregular worn edges, and the spine with layers in cream and beige tones held by visible stitching. The black charcoal models the form with diagonal hatching on the torso and the white heightening, though subtle, lifts the light against the tinted ground. The yellowish stains and the barely sketched lower half confirm this is a study, not a finished work.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this page as if it were a half-mapped sky. The half-length gentleman appears without a face, just an empty oval with a faint vertical line, like a constellation not yet named. The right side of the torso is shaded with parallel hatching that reminds me of how we mark light and shadow on a planet. Below the drawing dissolves into loose lines, as if the artist left room for what is not yet seen. And the number 54 at the bottom anchors everything, like a coordinate.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This gentleman has no face! He is just an oval with two little ears and a tiny line in the middle, it makes me giggle and feels a bit mysterious. He wears an open coat, a long waistcoat and a scarf at the neck, and he has one hand on his waist as if posing for a photo. His other hand has really long fingers. I like how the bottom part almost disappears with loose little lines, it looks like he is magically fading away. And in the corner it says 54, like his player number.
