What you would seeLo que verías

The photograph shows a single page from a bound sketchbook, seen front-on and filling almost the entire frame against a dark background. The paper is light brown, rough, mottled, and worn, with uneven edges, folded corners, and small tears; at left is a vertical blue-grey strip of the binding, and at right, the fore-edge of several stacked leaves. At center, in thin, trembling lines of black chalk, stands a gentleman shown half-length or kneeling, facing the viewer. His oval face is only just sketched: two large dark eyes, a short nose, and a tiny mouth carry most of the definition. His hair, tied back or in a period wig, falls beside his head. The torso is suggested by repeated curving strokes implying a coat, waistcoat, neckcloth, and broad folds, without closing the contours. His right hand, raised at the left of the composition, is a denser tangle of scribbles and holds something impossible to identify. The other hand crosses at his waist, and below, a large looping oval might be a bent leg, a coat skirt, or a hat. A faint '38' appears at upper right and '55' at lower right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the face, the only area where the lines gather into recognizable features, then follow the torso downward as the drawing dissolves into loose curves. Look next at the raised hand on the left: its tangle of lines changes the figure from a static portrait into someone mid-gesture. Finally, notice the paper's worn edges and page numbers to remember this is a working sketchbook page, not a finished presentation drawing.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is page 55 of the Verona Sketchbook, titled Gentlemen, drawn in 1760 by the Italian artist Francesco Lorenzi (1723-1787) in black chalk, and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art through the John L. Severance Fund. The museum classifies it as a bound volume in Drawings. Despite the plural title, only one figure is clearly visible on this page; who he was is not known. It was probably a rapid study or idea noted in a sketchbook rather than a finished portrait, as the open lines, sparse modeling, and lack of background suggest. No additional description is provided by the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail is that the sheet carries two different numbers: a faint '38' near the top and '55' at the lower right, a reminder that sketchbooks are often numbered, bound, and catalogued at different moments in their history.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Is this gentleman posing for a portrait, caught mid-conversation, or invented as a rehearsal for a larger composition?¿Este caballero posa para un retrato, fue sorprendido a mitad de una conversación o es un personaje inventado como ensayo para una composición mayor?
  2. Why does the face receive just enough definition to meet our gaze while the clothing and hands remain unresolved?¿Por qué el rostro recibe apenas la definición suficiente para devolvernos la mirada, mientras la ropa y las manos quedan sin resolver?
  3. How does knowing this is one page among many in a sketchbook change the way we judge its unfinished state?¿Cómo cambia nuestra valoración de lo inacabado al saber que es una página entre muchas de un cuaderno de bocetos?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the light brown, mottled and rough paper, with uneven edges and folded corners that speak of fragility. On the left you can see the bluish gray strip of the binding and on the right the edge of the stacked sheets. The black charcoal is trembling and light, barely fixing the face with dark eyes while everything else remains open, without closed outlines. I am moved by that provisional quality from 1760 that still breathes on page 55.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page like a night observation half in focus. In the center a gentleman in half figure emerges from the dark background like a barely traced constellation. His face concentrates the light, with two large eyes looking at the viewer, while the torso dissolves into curved orbits of coat and neckerchief. His raised right hand holds something impossible to identify, like a blurry star. The numbers 38 and 55 above and below are faint coordinates of this sketchbook.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone drew a man very quickly before he left. His face is tiny with two very black eyes looking at you and his body is all swirly little lines, as if he has a big coat and a scarf. He has a raised hand holding something weird you cannot understand. At the bottom there is a round belly that could be his leg or his hat. I like that the paper looks old and wrinkly like a cookie.
