What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a full page from a bound sketchbook, photographed against a nearly black background. The sheet, made of light brown, fibrous paper, fills almost the entire frame; its edges are uneven, its corners worn, and its surface lightly spotted. Along the left side the binding is visible: layered old papers in greenish and cream tones, stitched and frayed; at the bottom, in tiny numerals, appears “82”. Against this warm ground, fragments of female arms — with no body and no face — are drawn in softly shaded black chalk with touches of white. In the upper right, a forearm enters diagonally from the edge; its hand opens with fingers spread, and just below it another, more closed hand seems to hold or accompany the gesture. At the center, a gathered, puffed sleeve forms deep folds, with dense shadows and white highlights suggesting heavy cloth. From there another arm descends, only lightly sketched, stretching toward the lower left corner and ending in an open hand with long, relaxed fingers. Between the two studies remain ghostly white strokes, nearly erased, of other rehearsed hands and contours. The even reproduction light reveals the roughness of the paper, the grain of the chalk, and the fragility of the book.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the lower arm from left to right until you reach the gathered sleeve; then jump to the raised hand in the upper corner. Next, slow down over the center of the page: the faint white lines that first seem like smudges begin to resolve into rehearsed hands and contours.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is page 82 of the *Verona Sketchbook*, made in 1760 by Francesco Lorenzi (Italian, 1723–1787), in black chalk with white heightening. It belongs to the Drawings department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, credited to the John L. Severance Fund. Studies of hands, arms, and drapery like this were a common working tool for 18th-century painters: they allowed gestures and folds of cloth to be tested before being integrated into a larger figure. Which finished work, if any, this page was preparing is not stated in the source and is not known from the information provided.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: although the title mentions arms and hands, a slow look reveals more hands than complete arms — the extra ones appear among the faint, almost erased strokes in the center of the sheet.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the light brown, fibrous paper with its irregular edges and worn corners that reveal its age. On the left you can see the spine with layers of old greenish and cream papers, stitched and frayed, and at the bottom the number 82. On the rough surface you can appreciate the shaded black charcoal and touches of white that give volume to the drapery. I love the stains, the graininess of the stroke and those ghostly erased lines that show the trial process.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page like a sky of tests, almost like a star chart of gestures. Against the warm background of the paper, arms enter and leave the frame like incomplete constellations. At the top an open hand with spread fingers, below another falling relaxed toward the corner. In the center the puffed sleeve creates dense shadows and white highlights, like a planet with relief. Those ghostly traces between the studies are shooting stars of ideas the artist tried and left behind.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone drew floating arms without a body, like magic! There is a hand at the top with fingers wide open, another more closed right next to it and another at the bottom with long relaxed fingers. In the middle there is a puffy sleeve with many dark wrinkles and white highlights that looks like princess fabric. The paper is light brown and rough, with really old edges. You can see erased white little lines, as if the artist made a mistake and tried again.

At the bottom of the page, written very small, what number can you read?

    HintPista

Look at the bottom, near the edge of the light brown paper.

Busca abajo, cerca del borde del papel color marrón claro.

  2. #2

In the center of the sheet there is a part of the clothing with many folds and shadows, what is that part that covers the arm called?

    HintPista

It is made of puffy fabric and goes around the arm.

  3. #3

If you count only the hands clearly drawn in black charcoal, without the ghostly erased traces, how many main hands can you see?

    HintPista

Look at the top right there are two and at the bottom left there is one more.
