What you would seeLo que verías
A full sheet of pale blue-gray paper fills nearly the entire image, shown as part of a bound volume. On the left is a narrow tan strip from the binding; on the right and bottom, the deckled, worn edges of the pages are visible, slightly cream-colored and frayed. At the top center, handwritten in dark ink, is the number “42”; at the lower right corner appears “83”. Faint yellowish stains mark the left side, and the paper has a fine, grainy texture. In the center, slightly above the middle, hangs a study of drapery drawn in black chalk with touches of white. The cloth descends in long vertical folds, widening and narrowing as if covering legs. A large triangular fold dominates the lower half, its shaded interior crossed by diagonal hatching and edged with a bright white line. Other folds are suggested with soft gray shadows, loose contours, and luminous ridges. At the bottom, the fabric gathers into small twisted points. Beneath its right edge emerges a single bare foot, seen from above, with toes pointing downward and only summarily modeled. Around the drapery are very faint, unfinished strokes: a curved line to the left, a short mark near the left stain, and a small hook shape to the right. The rest of the page is empty, which makes the floating garment feel suspended, without ground, body, head, or setting.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the bare foot at the bottom, the only visible part of the body, and then move upward through the folds. Notice how the brightest white lines do not outline the cloth, but trace its ridges. That shift turns an apparently floating fabric into the suggestion of a standing figure.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is page 83 of the *Verona Sketchbook*, made in 1760 by Italian artist Francesco Lorenzi (1723–1787). It is drawn in black chalk with white heightening and belongs to a bound volume held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, credited to the John L. Severance Fund. Studies of drapery were a common exercise in eighteenth-century Italian art, used to understand how cloth falls, folds, and catches light over a body. It is not known from the available data whether this sheet was preparation for a specific painting, or for which figure the drapery was intended.

Curious detailDato curioso
The blue paper is not just a background: it works as the middle tone. Lorenzi only had to add dark chalk for the shadows and white for the highlights, letting the paper itself create the cloth's intermediate values.

I pause on the pale grayish blue paper and its fine, grainy texture. Notice the irregular, frayed cream edges on the right and bottom, and the faint yellowish stains on the left. The drawing is made with black charcoal heightened with white: look at the luminous white line bordering the large triangular fold and the bright ridges. The beige strip of the binding on the left reminds us that this sheet is not loose, it is still sewn into the volume.

This cloth seems to float like a nebula suspended in the void of the paper. There is no ground, body or head, just vertical folds that fall and twist into points at the bottom. The large triangular fold in the center, with its shaded interior and diagonal strokes, catches light like a crater lit by the sun. And below, peeking from the edge, that single bare foot seen from above is like a small satellite that gives scale to the whole.

It looks like a ghost dress floating! It has many long folds and a huge one shaped like a triangle with a shiny white edge. At the bottom the fabric ends in crooked little points and a bare foot with toes pointing down peeks out from one. It has no head or body or floor, it is just hanging alone in the middle of the sheet. If you stare, it seems to be walking in the air without us seeing it whole.
