What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a single page from an old bound sketchbook, photographed against a dark background. The paper is a warm, uneven tan, rough and fibrous in texture, with frayed, darkened edges. On the left, a vertical strip reveals the gutter of the binding; on the right and along the bottom, the pale blue-gray edges of the other pages can be seen. Occupying only the lower half of the page is a study of draped cloth, drawn in black chalk with white heightening. The fabric swells into two broad, rounded volumes separated by a darker hollow in the middle, like knees or a lap covered by a heavy mantle. Long white strokes run along the upper ridges, marking where light would strike, while soft black shading sinks into the creases and gives the cloth weight. Toward the right, the drapery narrows and ends in smaller, looser folds that trail along the ground. The upper half of the sheet is almost empty, except for a tiny white speck near the center and a few very faint, barely visible lines. At the lower right corner, the number '35' is written in small numerals. The overall scale feels intimate and close, like looking over the artist's shoulder at a private exercise.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two white ridges in the center: they are the first thing that catches the light and they organize all the folds. Then look for the body that is not drawn, suggested only by the cloth's volume. Finally, notice the worn edges and the page number, which remind us this was a working tool, not a finished work.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is page 35 of the Verona Sketchbook, drawn in 1760 by Francesco Lorenzi (1723-1787), an Italian artist. It is done in black chalk with white heightening and today belongs to the museum's Drawings department, credited to the John L. Severance Fund. In the 18th century, drapery studies like this were a common exercise: artists practiced how cloth falls, gathers, and catches light before including it in larger figures or compositions. It is not known whether this specific study was made for a particular painting.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: although no body or figure appears, the height and separation of the folds strongly suggest bent knees beneath the cloth, as if an invisible person were sitting there.

I focus on the warm brown paper, rough and fibrous, with frayed and darkened edges from time. It is moving to see how the black chalk sinks into the folds and the white heightening lifts the crests where light hits. That contrast gives weight and volume to the mantle. Notice the almost empty upper half, with just a small white spot, and below the contained study. Everything speaks of an intimate working sketchbook, carefully preserved since 1760.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this page as if it were a map of light and shadow. The white marks the illuminated peaks, like lunar mountains, and the black sinks into the dark valleys between the two rounded volumes. That dark central hollow reminds me of the terminator between day and night. Even the number 35 in the corner works like coordinates. It is an exercise in understanding how light reveals form, something we also do when observing craters and folds through a telescope.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic little blanket with two chubby hills, as if someone were hiding underneath with bent knees! I like how the white shines on top as if the sun were hitting it and the black hides inside the folds. At the bottom right there is a tiny number 35, like a page in my homework notebook. On top there is almost nothing, just a little speck. It makes me feel like I am peeking at someone's secret drawing.
