black chalk with white heightening

What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an open sketchbook photographed against a very dark, almost black background. The main page occupies most of the frame and is made of warm tan, aged-looking paper with deckled, worn edges on the right and bottom; to the left a narrow sliver of the opposite page is visible. Centered on the sheet is the head of an older man with a long, wavy beard, seen from slightly below and turned upward. His forehead is broad and partly bald, his hair gathers in loose curls at the side, and his beard flows down in broad, undulating masses that fade into the paper toward the bottom. He looks up with one eye more clearly defined than the other, his nose seen in foreshortening and his mouth slightly open beneath the moustache. Black chalk creates the shadows, the nostril, the mouth, and the dense hatching in the hair, while white heightening lights the brow, cheek, nose, and strands of the beard. The effect is sculptural but unfinished: the neck and shoulders are only suggested by a few loose lines. Small details reward slow looking, including a dark smudge near the upper left, faint stains, the handwritten number '45' at the top, '89' at the lower right, and a pale torn strip along the bottom edge.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the eyes raised toward the upper edge and notice how little of them is actually drawn. Then move across the beard, where white heightening and black chalk trade places to create volume. Finally, look at the torn edges and page numbers: the drawing is also a physical object from a sketchbook.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a page from a Verona sketchbook by the Italian artist Francesco Lorenzi (1723-1787), dated 1760. It is drawn in black chalk with white heightening and belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it was acquired through the John L. Severance Fund. Studies of heads like this were commonly used in the 18th century to practice foreshortening, expression, and lighting before or during work on larger compositions. The identity of the man is not recorded, nor is it known whether he was an older model, a saint, or a prophet imagined by the artist.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: the upward-gazing eye is barely outlined, yet the white heightening on the brow and nose makes the gaze feel intensely present.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What emotion do you read in this upward gaze: wonder, prayer, fear, or something else?¿Qué emoción lees en esa mirada hacia arriba: asombro, oración, temor u otra cosa?
  2. How does the tinted paper change the work of the black and white chalk?¿Cómo cambia el papel de tono medio el trabajo del carboncillo negro y del blanco?
  3. What might this head study gain from remaining unfinished and inside a sketchbook?¿Qué gana este estudio de cabeza al quedar inacabado y dentro de un cuaderno?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look with a conservator's eyes, you see the aged buff paper with torn edges and that pale strip at the bottom where time left its mark. The black charcoal builds deep shadows in the nose and beard, while white heightening lifts the forehead and cheek with precise touches. I find the unfinished quality moving: the neck only hinted at, the beard fading into the paper. It feels fragile and beautiful, asking us to protect its light with great care.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This head reminds me of someone gazing at the night sky. Seen from below in foreshortening, with upturned eyes and parted lips, he looks as if he just spotted a shooting star. The 1760 Verona sketchbook page is like a buff-colored sky where charcoal becomes shadow and white heightening becomes starlight. We do not know if he is a saint or an elderly model, but his wonder feels just like ours under the stars.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

He looks like a grandpa with a huge fluffy beard that is melting into the paper. His head is tilted up like when you watch a balloon float away. One eye shows more than the other and his beard has shiny white streaks. I like that they did not finish his neck and that the paper looks old and a bit torn. I feel he is surprised and wants to tell me a secret about the sky.

  1. #1

Above the bearded head there is a handwritten number, what number is it?

    HintPista

Look at the top of the page, to the left of center, near a small dark spot.

  2. #2

What kind of paper is the head drawn on, judging by its warm color?

    HintPista

It is not white, it is a light yellowish brown that makes the white highlights stand out.

  3. #3

What lighting technique besides black charcoal did the artist use to brighten forehead and cheek?

    HintPista

They are pale touches that seem to glow on the darker paper and create a sculptural volume.
