What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a full page of an old sketchbook, photographed against a dark background that reveals its worn edges. The paper, pale ochre and slightly mottled, fills almost the entire frame; on the left, the central binding is barely visible, and on the right is the irregular fore-edge, with traces of bluish leaves. In the lower right corner, the number 13 appears, barely legible. In the upper center, drawn with fine lines and soft shading, is the tilted head of an older woman, seen in three-quarter view and turned to the left. She has a wrinkled face, strongly marked brows, half-closed eyes, and a mouth pressed shut in a tense expression, almost one of effort. Her hair, partly gathered or covered, is suggested with short strokes. From the lower part of the drawing rises a bare, flexed arm, large in proportion, forming a broad curve until it brings the hand, very small and sketchy, close to the mouth. Touches of white light up the forehead, nose, arm, and hand, creating volume on the toned paper. Below, brief shading at the elbow strengthens the musculature. The rest of the page remains empty, with fibers, tiny marks, and a rough, matte texture.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the face and its tense expression; then follow the arm's wide curve until you reach the tiny hand by the mouth. Notice how the white touches, not the dark lines, create the sense of volume. Finally, step back: the emptiness of the page makes the fragment feel suspended, as if awaiting the rest of the body.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is page 13 of the Verona Sketchbook, a bound volume by Francesco Lorenzi (1723-1787), an Italian artist, dated 1760 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, with credit to the John L. Severance Fund. It is made in black chalk with white heightening on toned paper, a common eighteenth-century technique for studying light and volume without moving on to canvas. Sketchbooks served as a space for practice: models, gestures, and fragments of the body were repeated before being incorporated, or not, into larger compositions. From the available information, it is not known who the model was or whether this study was used in a finished work; it was probably an exercise in observation.

Curious detailDato curioso

A striking visual detail: the hand brought to the mouth is drawn much smaller and more sketchily than the muscular arm supporting it, as if the artist's interest shifted midway across the page.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What might the woman be doing or feeling just before or after this gesture?¿Qué podría estar haciendo o sintiendo la mujer justo antes o después de este gesto?
  2. Why study a head and an arm without drawing the rest of the body?¿Por qué estudiar una cabeza y un brazo sin dibujar el resto del cuerpo?
  3. How does the image change if we imagine the blank page as silence rather than unfinished space?¿Cómo cambia la imagen si imaginamos la página en blanco como silencio y no como espacio inconcluso?

The conservatorLa restauradora

What draws me is the material: the toned paper in light ochre, with visible fibers, speckled and matte, holds the whole drawing. Black chalk outlines the head with fine lines and soft shading, while touches of white lift the light on forehead, nose and arm. You can see worn edges, uneven fore-edges and bluish traces of other sheets. The number 13 at lower right confirms this is a sketchbook page, not a standalone work, made to test and observe.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page as an observing field. Near the top center floats a tilted head, in three-quarter view to the left, with wrinkled face and tight mouth, as if measuring effort. Below, a large flexed arm curves toward the mouth with a small hand just sketched. The empty space around acts like a dark sky: it lets the figure breathe. The white highlight on ochre ground works like a glow that models craters and volumes with no need for color.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This older woman looks like she is straining, with strong eyebrows and a tight mouth. Her arm looks huge compared to her tiny hand almost touching her mouth. I like that the paper is not white but cookie-colored, and they added little white shines on forehead and arm to make it look puffy. The page is almost empty and looks old, with tiny spots. At the bottom right there is a little number 13, as if it were her homework notebook.
