A single page of aged vellum, creamy and slightly uneven, fills the frame, photographed against a pale ground. The upper half holds the text block; the lower half is a wide, mostly empty margin, with faint stains, tiny specks and very fine ruled lines barely visible on the surface. On the right, about fifteen lines of dark brown-black Gothic script are written in a compact, regular hand, with abbreviated Latin words and carefully aligned right edges. Small decorated initials punctuate the text in blue, red-pink and burnished gold, and a narrow horizontal line-filler in blue, red and gold closes one line. The whole left side is occupied by a tall, narrow border panel. Inside it, deep blue acanthus scrolls outlined in black curl around gold leaves and cup-like forms touched with orange and light blue. A slender green stem rises through the center bearing pointed leaves and small flowers like pansies: white, blue and yellow petals with dark centers, plus a brownish-red bloom and dark blue buds. Fine white dots highlight the blue foliage. The gold catches an even, soft light, while the matte tempera and smooth vellum give the page a quiet, delicate texture.

This is folio 106r of a Book of Hours made for the Use of Rouen, around 1470, attributed to the Master of the Geneva Latini, Rouen's principal illuminator in the second half of the 1400s. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Rouen was then an important center of book production, supported by its wealthy cathedral chapter and by stationers and booksellers probably concentrated near the cathedral. Books of Hours were private prayer books organized around daily devotions. The exact patron of this volume is not known.

This creamy vellum speaks to me of time and care. I see its smooth yet slightly irregular surface, with faint speckles and barely visible ruling lines that guided the script. The brownish ink forms about fifteen very regular lines in gothic lettering, and the initials in blue, reddish pink and burnished gold remain intact. I pause at the border: blue acanthus outlined in black, golden leaves and that thin green stem with tiny flowers. The gold still reflects softly, the tempera stays matte. It is a delicate and very well preserved page.

This page looks like a hidden garden next to the letters. On the right side there are many neat little brownish lines in Latin, with small blue and pink and shiny gold letters. But what I like most is the border on the left, full of little plants. There are blue leaves with white dots, golden leaves like cups and a thin green stem climbing with tiny flowers with white, blue and yellow petals. There is also a reddish brown flower and navy buds. At the bottom there is a lot of empty space with tiny speckles.
