What you would seeLo que verías

A cream vellum page with a single block of Latin text on the left, written in dense, regular black Gothic script. At the start of each verse are two- to three-line decorated initials with deep blue grounds, red, white and gold geometric infill, and fine penwork flourishes. Running the full height of the text block on the right is a lush vertical border. It features scrolling acanthus in cobalt blue and burnished gold, small green leaves, and stylized flowers: near the top, three pink carnation-like blossoms with green calyxes and gold outlines; toward the bottom, small five-petaled blue flowers with golden centers. The main vine undulates with thin black tendrils tipped in gold, creating a sense of raised relief. The parchment background is smooth with faint age spots and a wide empty lower margin. Even lighting highlights the metallic sheen of the gold against the matte vellum and the saturation of blue and vermilion.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the column of script and see how the colored initials set the rhythm for reading. Then follow the blue and gold vine in the margin and notice the shift from pink blossoms at the top to blue ones below. Observe the contrast between the matte parchment and the glittering gold that enlivens the border.

ContextContexto

This leaf is from a Book of Hours for the Use of Rouen, dated about 1470 and attributed to the Master of the Geneva Latini, Rouen's leading illuminator active from 1460 to 1480. It is made with ink, tempera and gold on vellum. In the late 1400s Rouen was a major center of manuscript production, supported by the wealthy chapter of its cathedral and by stationers and booksellers working near the precinct. The text shown is from the penitential psalms, with decorated initials marking verses. The volume belongs to the Medieval Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The original patron of this copy is not recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

Books of Hours were handwritten bestsellers before printing became dominant, and the Use of Rouen has distinctive liturgical features that allow specialists to identify its origin even without a colophon.

If you look closely at the creamy vellum you will see it is not paper but prepared skin, its smooth surface keeping light age spots. The Latin text is written in very regular black gothic script, and each verse begins with a painted initial in intense blue, red, white and gold. I focus on the border on the right margin: acanthus scrolls in cobalt and burnished gold interwoven with small green leaves and three pink carnations on top and tiny blue flowers below. The gold shines because it is burnished, and the fine black ink tendrils create a raised effect.

I like to think of this page as a small orderly sky. The block of Latin text on the left is like a compact constellation of black ink, and each blue and gold initial marks a guiding star at the start of a penitential psalm. On the right margin the vertical border unfolds like a leafy milky way: a winding stem with tendrils and golden tips holding three pink flowers on top and five-petaled blue florets below. The burnished gold reflects the even light as if catching a flash of sun on the pale vellum.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page looks like a magic book with a vine climbing up one side. On the left there are many tiny black letters packed together and at the start of each line there are big letters painted blue with red and shiny gold. Along the right edge a little plant with blue and green leaves curls upward and has three pink flowers on top and small blue flowers with golden dots below. The background is cookie cream color and there is a lot of empty space at the bottom. I like to count the flowers and see how the gold sparkles in the light.
