This folio comes from a Book of Hours made for the Use of Rouen, dated circa 1470 and attributed to the Master of the Geneva Latini, active in Rouen from about 1460 to 1480. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum, as recorded by the Cleveland Museum of Art. During the late 1400s Rouen was a major center for manuscript production, supported by the wealthy chapter of its cathedral which commissioned books and maintained a large library. Stationers and booksellers clustered near the cathedral precinct. The artist takes his name from a manuscript now in Geneva and is regarded as Rouen’s leading illuminator in the second half of the fifteenth century. The original patron of this volume is not recorded, but its format and decoration are typical of private devotional books made for affluent lay owners.

It looks like the magic frame of a storybook! On the left there are blue vines curling like shiny swirls with little green leaves and tiny wine red and pale pink flowers. If you blow, you almost feel golden dust will fly out. The black text is all tight with tiny little letters and at the start of each line there are small letters with colorful swirls. It is tiny, to hold in your hands like a treasure. I imagine when you open it it smells like an old book and adventure.
