What you would seeLo que verías

A folio of yellowish cream vellum, smooth with slight age toning, seen frontally. Latin text occupies the right half, written in small, highly regular black gothic textualis across eight lines. Each verse begins with a two-line-high illuminated initial: alternating deep blue with red filigree and pale pink with blue filigree, each on a burnished gold ground and framed in blue and red. At the end of some lines are small horizontal bar ornaments with wavy patterns in blue, red and gold. On the left, a full vertical border is the visual focus. On a ground speckled with tiny black and gold dots, a large curling acanthus leaf in cobalt blue with gold and pale pink highlights winds upward on thin stems. At the top are five vermilion five-petalled flowers with golden centers and lance-shaped green leaves. Below, a cluster of dark blue grapes with white highlights and vine leaves in green and light green, with golden tendrils. The light is flat and diffuse, typical of tempera and shell gold on parchment, with a soft metallic sheen. The vegetal border sits in the foreground; the crisp, balanced text block forms the background.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First scan the text block and pause on the golden initials that mark each verse. Then follow the blue vine from bottom to top, noticing the shift from grapes to blossoms. Look closely at the dotted gold and black ground: that glittering dust reveals the manuscript’s luxury.

ContextContexto

This is a folio from a Book of Hours for the Use of Rouen, dated about 1470 and attributed to the Master of the Geneva Latini, the leading illuminator active in Rouen between 1460 and 1480, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art record. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum. Books of Hours were devotional manuscripts for private prayer by well-to-do laypeople. In the late 1400s Rouen was a major center of book production connected to its cathedral chapter. The marginal decoration with acanthus, flowers and fruit is typical of French late Gothic illumination. The original patron or first owner of this copy is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The detailed vine borders with acanthus, flowers and grapes were often painted by specialists different from the scribe, showing a clear division of labor in Rouen workshops around 1470.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the yellowish cream vellum and its faint age spots, signs of almost six centuries of life. The tempera and burnished gold leaf remain stable, with that soft metallic sheen that creates a flat, diffuse light. I look at the very regular black gothic textualis script and the two-line initials with filigree over gold. The vegetal border fascinates me: cobalt blue acanthus, red flowers and dark blue grapes with white highlights. Everything points to careful craftsmanship around 1470 in Rouen.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page as a small ordered sky. The dotted background in black and gold reminds me of a starry night where the blue acanthus winds like a constellation. Above, five five-petaled flowers in vermilion red look like suns; below, the cluster of dark blue grapes shines with white dots like moons. The block of eight lines in Latin is the stable horizon, while the vertical strip fills the whole edge. It is a flat cosmos made with tempera and gold on parchment.

This page looks like a garden with letters! On the right there are eight very straight lines in black and some big colorful letters with shiny gold. But what I like most is the border on the left that goes from top to bottom. It has a long blue plant with light pink touches, five red flowers with golden centers and green leaves, and below some blue grapes with vine leaves and golden curls. The background has little black and gold dots like magic sparkles.
