What you would seeLo que verías
A single vertical page of pale, cream-colored vellum, photographed against a light background, with the bound edge barely visible on the left. In the upper left sits a compact block of handwritten text in dark brown and black ink, in a dense Gothic script with regular, angular strokes. Several lines reach the right edge of the block, while below them the parchment remains completely empty across more than half the page. Reading is punctuated by painted initials: a large initial near the left margin, filled with red, blue and gold scrollwork; a smaller blue and gold one within the text; and another at the lower left. Short decorative bars in blue, pink, red and gold fill out two line endings. On both sides, vertical borders frame the writing. The left one is narrow, with small blue, red and green flowers. The right one is much wider and more exuberant: large acanthus scrolls in deep blue and burnished gold curl and intertwine, dotted with red flowers, dark berries or buds, and slender green leaves on pointed white grounds. Light is even, revealing the smooth, slightly warm surface of the vellum, a faint stain below the text and the shadow of writing showing through from the other side.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the text block and notice how the painted initials punctuate the reading like small signposts. Then move to the right border and follow the blue and gold scrolls until they turn into flowers. Coming back to the page, the vast empty margin changes its scale: this is not a crowded page, but an object made to be held, looked at and prayed with slowly.
ContextContexto
This is folio 149r of a Book of Hours made for the Use of Rouen around 1470, attributed to the Master of the Geneva Latini, an illuminator active in Rouen between about 1460 and 1480. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Rouen was an important center of book production in the late 1400s and early 1500s, supported by its wealthy cathedral chapter, while stationers and booksellers probably gathered near the cathedral. Books of Hours were personal prayer books, widely owned by laypeople. The owner of this particular volume is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although the text was written in a highly regular hand, two tiny line-fillers at the bottom —one blue and pink, the other red, blue and gold— were painted simply to complete the line and keep the text block perfectly rectangular.

I pause on what you don't notice at first: the vellum. That prepared skin, creamy in tone, smooth and warm, which here is left more than half empty below the block of text. I see its slightly shiny surface, the little stain beneath the sixteen lines of Gothic script and the shadow of the writing on the other side showing through. For me, the luxury is in the materials: the burnished gold of the acanthus scrolls reflecting the light, and the brown and black inks so regular. Everything speaks of meticulous work made in Rouen around 1470.

I look at this page as if it were an ordered sky. At the top left, the text is a compact, dark constellation, sixteen dense lines taking up little space. Below, the creamy emptiness of the vellum is immense, like the blank space between stars. And on the sides, the borders are like nebulae: the left one narrow and discreet with little flowers, and the right one wide and exuberant, where the acanthus scrolls in intense blue and gold curl like orbits. I love that contrast between order and exuberance.

This page looks unfinished! At the top there are lots of tiny crowded letters, like little black and brown ants, with some big pretty colored letters, with red, blue and shiny gold. And then lots of empty creamy space! On the sides there are vines. The one on the left is very thin with little flowers, but the one on the right is huge, with blue and gold leaves that hug each other and little red flowers. It looks like a garden trying to escape from the page. Why did they leave so much blank space?
