A single vellum leaf, tall and narrow, photographed against its own creamy, slightly uneven surface. Most of the page is empty margin; the written and painted area occupies the upper-center, leaving a broad expanse of pale parchment below and a small number, 43, at the upper right. On the left, a compact block of Gothic script in dark brown-black ink runs in tight, regular lines. At the start of several verses, square decorated initials in blue, red, pink, and gold interrupt the text, each carefully painted and slightly raised in visual weight. Short horizontal line-fillers in blue, red, and gold with white patterning close off incomplete lines. Faint reddish ruling is still visible around the text. To the right, a narrow vertical border panel glows with color: at the top, curling acanthus scrolls in deep blue, burnished gold, and orange-red twist over a speckled ground. Below, a golden ribbed vase with a flared rim sits on a small patch of green. From it rises a slender plant with pointed green leaves, pale pink-and-white fan-shaped blossoms, and small vivid blue flowers on thin stems. The paint is flat yet jewel-like, the gold catching light, and tiny black dots texture the white ground around the stems.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the rhythm of the dark script and the colored initials along the left edge, then move right to the vertical garden panel. Notice how the vase anchors the decoration at the bottom, turning the margin into a small ordered garden. The contrast between reading on the left and looking on the right is central to the page.

ContextContexto

This is folio 43 recto of a Book of Hours made for the Use of Rouen, around 1470, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. Books of Hours were prayer books for private devotion, structured around prayers at different hours of the day. According to the source, Rouen in the late 1400s and early 1500s was an important center of book production; its cathedral chapter spent large sums commissioning books and maintaining its library, and stationers and booksellers probably gathered near the cathedral. The illuminator, known as the Master of the Geneva Latini, was Rouen's principal illuminator in the second half of the 1400s. His real name is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The artist's name is a modern convention: 'Master of the Geneva Latini' means he is identified by a manuscript now in Geneva, not by a signature or a documented personal name.

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look through my magnifier you will see pure craft. The vellum is not perfect white, it is creamy and slightly uneven and you can still see the faint reddish ruling lines that guided the dark brown gothic script. I focus on the burnished gold leaf on the initials and on the fluted vase, still catching light after more than five hundred years. The tempera is laid in thin layers and the little black dots on the white ground tell me nothing here was improvised.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this page as if it were a night sky. The text is a neat, dense constellation on the left and on the right there is a vertical band that shines like a milky way of acanthus scrolls in deep blue, orange red and gold. The slender plant rising from the gilded pot with pale pink and vivid blue blossoms reminds me of a miniature solar system, tiny but complete, floating on a vast expanse of creamy parchment. It is order and wonder on a single leaf.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This leaf is tiny on top and huge on the bottom because they left a lot of creamy empty space. On the left there is a little block of crowded letters with small blue, red and gold initials that look like stickers. On the right there is a narrow shiny garden with a tiny golden pot and a little plant with pointy green leaves and pink and blue flowers. I like that the gold really shines and that the pot looks like a toy sitting on a tiny patch of green grass.
