What you would seeLo que verías
The piece fills almost the entire frame, photographed head-on and leaning slightly against a background that shifts from black at the top to soft gray below. It is a wide, nearly flat, perfectly circular plate, seen from its inner face. Its rim is painted in a continuous earthy red, and four broad diagonal bands of the same color radiate from a central ring, dividing the surface into four sectors like an X-shaped cross. At the center, a smaller pale circle is enclosed by the red ring, creating a calm focal point amid all the movement. Each sector contains a stylized figure twisting into a loop, like a ribbon or serpent. Its body is a wide red band outlined in black that crosses over itself; at one end, a small head can be made out, with a circular eye, an upturned beak or snout, and a curled crest. Fine details accumulate around it: short strokes like teeth or feathers, bands filled with rectangles, jagged black triangles, and an oval area marked with parallel lines. The interior ground is a creamy beige, uneven, with stains, fine cracks, and wear consistent with ancient ceramic. Soft light casts a shadow beneath the plate and reveals three small metal mounting clips on the rim.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central ring and follow the four red bands outward, as if they were two crossed axes. Then turn your attention to a single quadrant and try to locate the animal's head, eye, and looping body. Comparing the four sections reveals the surprise: they repeat a pattern, but they are not identical copies.

The source identifies this piece simply as Plate, by an unknown maker, dated 400-1000, and associated with Panama and the Coclé culture. It is pottery, catalogued as ceramic in the Art of the Americas department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it arrived as a Gift of John Wise. The source description is empty, so its exact place of origin, use, and the specific animal represented are not known. In general terms, Coclé pottery from pre-Hispanic Panama is known for polychrome painting and highly stylized animal forms; this plate is probably an example of that visual language.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual observation: although the design seems perfectly symmetrical at first glance, the four animal figures are rotated and vary in small details of the head, bands, and black triangles, so the repetition creates movement rather than monotony.

I pause on what time has left on this plate. I see the creamy beige surface full of stains and fine craquelure, and on top the earthy red and black still holding strong. The central ring and the four diagonal bands remain well bonded despite wear. The three metal mounting staples on the rim remind me we now support it to prevent further damage. We do not know who made it between 400 and 1000, but its Coclé polychrome painting endures and asks for soft light and careful handling.

When I look at it I see a portable sky. The plate is perfectly circular and its red central ring feels like a calm sun, with four diagonal bands radiating like rays forming an X. Each sector holds a coiled figure that seems to spin, and the whole has a rotational symmetry that reminds me of a constellation turning. It is Coclé ceramics from Panama, between 400 and 1000, and although we do not know which animal it shows, its motion makes me think of orbits and cycles.

It looks like a magic plate for a giant pizza. It has a red circle in the middle and four red paths dividing it like a big X. In each slice there is a cartoon animal curled like a snake with a little head, a round eye and a wavy crest. Its body is red with a black outline and has little teeth and tiny triangles. The background is cookie colored with spots because it is very very old. I like counting the four little animals over and over.
