What you would seeLo que verías

The work is a vertically hung rectangular textile with a finely striped background in dusty rose or muted mauve, showing a subtle ribbed weave typical of silk. Over it runs a repeating diagonal pattern that forms a large lattice of garlands. Each garland combines two intertwined elements: a trompe-l'œil lace in white and cream, with openwork ovals filled with tiny floral motifs in blue, red and beige; and naturalistic flower bouquets. The bouquets alternate large roses with grey-blue and white petals, small five-petalled white blossoms with yellow centers, pinkish buds and green leaves in varied shades. The stems, in pale beige, cross to create a diamond network covering the entire surface. Even lighting highlights the satiny sheen of the brocaded silk against the matte striped ground. The side edges are frayed, indicating the fragment was cut from a longer length. In the foreground the density of the faux-lace embroidery and the slight relief of the brocade stand out, while in the background the vertical stripes give depth and order to the composition. Small shifts in flower placement and shading prevent mechanical monotony, inviting close, slow looking.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the diagonal of white faux lace that snakes across the cloth like a vine. Then pause on the bouquets and notice how each grey-blue rose shifts slightly in tone. Finally look at the striped ground, which makes the contrast between real lace and woven silk shimmer.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a silk brocade from France dated 1774–1793, by an unknown maker, in the Textiles department. Its specific workshop and original use are not recorded, but it was probably part of a furnishing or dress fabric. At that time Lyon was the leading French silk center and floral designs with lace effects were highly fashionable among the elite before the Revolution. The brocade technique allows supplementary colored threads to be woven as raised motifs over the ground. The piece entered the collection through purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund.

Curious detailDato curioso

The lace seen here is not real lace stitched on top but an effect woven directly on the brocade loom, a prized textile illusion in the 18th century for its skill and lustrous finish.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does knowing the lace is only a woven illusion change the value you give to the fabric?¿Qué efecto produce que el encaje sea solo una ilusión tejida y no un material añadido?
  2. How might the pattern feel different if you imagine it moving on a dress rather than flat in a museum?¿Cómo cambia la percepción del tejido si lo imaginas como vestido en movimiento en lugar de fragmento plano de museo?
  3. What does the regular repetition of flowers and diamonds suggest about attitudes toward nature and order at that time?¿Qué te dice la repetición regular de flores y rombos sobre el gusto por el orden y la naturaleza en esa época?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

I pause to listen to what the material of this brocade tells me. I see a striped silk ground in dusty pink with a satiny sheen, overlaid with raised brocading that forms diamonds. The so-called illusory lace is woven, not sewn, with openwork ovals in white and cream filled with tiny blue and red florets. The frayed edges confirm this is a cut fragment. I wonder how to stabilize those fibers without flattening the relief of the supplementary thread.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at this textile I see an ordered constellation. The vertical stripes of the ground are like meridians and over them the network of garlands traces diamonds that repeat diagonally, just like a star chart. Each bouquet with gray-blue roses and white flowers with yellow centers works like a star cluster connected by beige stems that act as orbits. The illusory lace with openwork ovals reminds me of craters seen through a telescope, tiny universes of color within the weave.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a garden hanging on the wall. I see many flowers making diamond-shaped paths all over the fabric. There are big gray-blue roses, little white flowers with yellow centers like tiny stars and green leaves everywhere. The funniest part is the lace that looks real but when you get close you see it is part of the cloth, with little holes that have tiny flowers inside. I like to count how many times the pattern repeats and trace the little stems with my finger.
