What you would seeLo que verías

The photograph shows, against a very pale, smooth gray ground, an oval gold locket opened in half, seen from the front and filling almost the whole frame. On the left, inside a dark, glossy rim finely scratched with use, is the painted miniature; on the right, the open lid reveals its empty metallic interior, nearly black and also scratched. At the top of the lid rises a small elongated loop for suspension, finished with a tiny ball. A central hinge joins the two halves and stresses the object's intimate, portable character. In the portrait, a man of about thirty appears bust-length, turned three-quarters to the right, looking out at the viewer. He has short, curly, already graying hair, side whiskers, a rounded face, flushed cheeks, and a restrained expression, somewhere between weary and watchful. He wears a very high, stiff white collar, a pale garment with a faintly repeated pattern, a dark fur-textured cloak over his shoulders, and small pink accents. A strong blue sash crosses his chest diagonally, and from it hangs, low down, the gold cross of an order. The miniature's background is grayish, worked with fine hatching and with mottling and crystallization that veil the surface, lending a fragile, aged feeling.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the whole object and at the empty, dark lid beside the face: the contrast makes the portrait feel both protected and exposed. Then move closer to the blue sash and the small cross at the bottom; there, private likeness turns into a claim of rank. Finally, notice the scratches and the veiled, crystallized surface, which add age and fragility to the sitter's contained expression.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is *Portrait of Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orléans, later King of the French*, painted in 1804 by Richard Cosway (British, 1742–1821) in watercolor on ivory, in a gold locket frame. Louis-Philippe (1773–1850), of the Orléans branch of the House of Bourbon, was living in exile in England between 1800 and 1815 and was thirty-one when this was made; he became king of the French in 1830 and was driven back into exile in England in 1848. The blue sash and cross are those of the Order of the Holy Spirit. The museum notes that the gray hatched background is characteristic of Cosway's later work.

Curious detailDato curioso

The small cross worn by the sitter can be identified as the Order of the Holy Spirit by its central white dove surrounded by green flames, on a Maltese cross with fleurs-de-lis between its arms.

I pause at the wear that tells this piece’s story. It is an 1804 watercolor on ivory kept in an oval gold locket, and the hatched gray background is veiled by spots and crystallization typical of aged ivory. I see the dark frame scratched from use and the almost black interior of the lid also scratched, signs it was opened and closed many times. The intense blue sash and the golden cross remain crisp, as does the dark mantle with its fur-like texture. It is an intimate and fragile object, meant to be carried close.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

There are no stars here, but there is a way to measure time. This oval locket open in the middle, with its central hinge and hanging loop, is like a small portable observatory for one person. On the left the miniature shows a man around thirty with curly graying hair looking at the viewer; on the right the empty lid is darkness, like a night sky with no constellations. The blue sash crossing his chest diagonally marks an axis, as if orienting the figure in space. Everything fits in the palm of a hand.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little golden treasure box that opens like an egg. On one side it has the painted picture of a man with pink cheeks, a very tall white collar and a dark coat that looks like plush, and on the other side there is nothing, just a little black scratched hollow. On top it has a tiny ball to hang it like a necklace. I like the blue sash he wears across his chest and his little golden cross that shines. It looks kind of old and scratched, as if someone carried it everywhere and opened it a lot to see the man.
