What you would seeLo que verías

A small carved wooden casket with a double-pitched, roof-shaped lid, shown in three-quarter view against a soft neutral gray background. The wood is a warm reddish-brown boxwood with a polished patina, visible grain, and signs of age including surface wear and a small irregular loss at the center of the front panel. Every surface is densely covered with high-relief figures. On the lower long side, the Christ Child swaddled in diagonal wrappings lies in a rectangular manger at the center; six haloed standing figures in long, linearly folded robes flank him, three on each side, with gestures of prayer or offering. On the lid slope directly above, the Crucified Christ is centered with outstretched arms, crowned by a halo, flanked by two outstretched-winged angels flying inward along the roof ridge and by seven haloed mourners gathered below the cross, hands clasped or holding attributes. Faces are stylized with almond eyes and incised halos. The carving is deep and crisp, creating strong shadows that emphasize the volume of bodies, wings and drapery. The scale feels intimate and portable, sized to be held in two hands, lit by soft even light that highlights the woody texture and sculptural detail.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First see the casket as a tiny sacred building with a roof. Then focus on the swaddled Child in the manger at the front center and move your eye vertically up to the Crucified Christ to see how birth and death are linked on one axis. Notice the hands and wings to appreciate the rhythm and precision of the carving.

ContextContexto

This is a boxwood casket with copper-alloy and glass details, dated to about 1050 and attributed to Anglo-Saxon England, possibly the West Midlands, during the Romanesque period of the 11th century. It is described as a rare, if not unique, example of high-quality woodcarving from Anglo-Saxon England. Probably made for ecclesiastical use, it may have housed relics. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, one long side shows the Christ child in the manger with the Crucifixion, mourners and angels above, the other long side shows the Ascension and Christ in Majesty, while the short sides depict the Baptism and the Entry into Jerusalem. The maker is unknown. It belongs to the Medieval Art collection.

Curious detailDato curioso

Boxwood was prized by medieval carvers for its exceptional hardness and fine grain, which allows for extremely crisp, durable detail even at very small scale, helping this nearly thousand-year-old casket retain its delicate folds and expressions.

I focus on the wood itself, that warm reddish chestnut tone of polished boxwood, with its visible grain and ancient patina full of wear and small losses at the center of the front. It amazes me that such a delicate wood carving from around 1050 has survived, when almost everything else has been lost. I notice the deep relief, the soft light casting shadows over tunics with parallel folds, outstretched wings and almond-eyed faces. It is an intimate, portable object, made to be held with both hands and viewed up close.

As a sky enthusiast, the first thing I look for are the haloes, those incised circles around the heads that look like small moons or luminous rings. There are many here: six around the rectangular manger of the Child and seven mourners beneath the cross, plus two angels in horizontal flight along the ridge of the gabled lid. They remind me of ordered constellations, figures orbiting a bright center, the Child below and the crucified Christ above. The whole narrative becomes a celestial map carved in wood.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a tiny wooden house with a roof shaped like a little rooftop and it is covered with tiny figures everywhere. Down below, in the middle, there is a baby lying in his little box and six people with shiny wheels on their heads are looking at him, three on each side. Up on the roof, there is a man with open arms on a cross and two angels with little wings flying at the sides. I like counting the little faces and seeing their long eyes and their outfits with little stripes. I would carry it like a treasure.
