What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows the cover of a bound album, photographed straight-on with a slight tilt that reveals the spine on the left. The background is a creamy beige paper with a canvas-like texture, visibly aged with soft foxing and faint stains along the lower edges. On the left side, a lithographic sketch depicts a woman in profile, Yvette Guilbert, seen from the torso up with her head thrown back and mouth slightly open as if singing. The line is loose, sketchy and dark, executed in lithographic crayon, with quick hatching on the neck, chest, upswept hair and long gloves covering her slender arms; her dress is barely suggested by flowing, translucent strokes. To the right of the figure, hand-drawn outlined lettering occupies three blocks: at the top «Yvette Guilbert» in large irregular double-line capitals, in the middle «Drawn by H. de Toulouse Lautrec» in smaller size, and at the lower right a handwritten ink signature «Yvette Guilbert» in cursive with an extended underline. The lighting is even and diffuse, typical of archival documentation, without harsh shadows. The spine is covered in muted sage-green cloth, worn and frayed at the head and tail, suggesting age and handling. The composition is asymmetrical, the airy figure on the left balanced by the typographic mass on the right, with generous empty space at the bottom. The close cropping fills most of the frame, conveying the intimate, human scale of a book held in the hands.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First notice the contrast between the trembling, expressive line of the singer and the hollow, decorative lettering of the title. Then focus on the taut neck and the relaxed hanging hand, which convey voice and stage presence. Finally look at the handwritten signature below, which makes the cover both a personal keepsake and a promotional object.

Curious detailDato curioso

Toulouse-Lautrec used lithography not only for single posters but also for bound albums like this one, which served as collectible portfolios that brought Parisian cabaret culture to late-century English audiences.

The conservatorLa restauradora

What moves me most is the paper itself, that creamy #D8CFC1 tone with a canvas-like texture and soft age spots along the lower edges. I look at the lithographic sketch in nervous dark pencil, with quick shading on Yvette Guilbert's neck and long gloves as she sings in profile. I linger on the gray-green cloth spine #7A8A7A, worn at the ends, and on the empty space in the lower area that lets both the drawing and the hand-drawn lettering breathe.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this cover as an asymmetrical sky map. On the left, the ethereal figure of Yvette Guilbert is like a constellation drawn with quick, floating lines, her head thrown back as if projecting sound into space. On the right, the text in three blocks works like stars of different brightness balancing the composition. The aged creamy background is the cosmic void and the gray-green spine on the left is the horizon anchoring the intimate universe of the book.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the lady is singing really loud with her mouth open and her head tilted back. I like that her dress is just a few floating lines and her arms are so skinny with super long gloves. The letters look funny, like they are hollow and someone drew them by hand. There is a lot of empty space at the bottom, as if they left room for her voice to come out. The book looks really old and I want to flip through it.

On the cover, what color is the cloth spine visible on the left side of the album?

    HintPista

Look at the left side edge of the bound volume, it is a different color from the creamy paper.

  2. #2

How many blocks of hand-drawn text appear to the right of the sketch of the singing woman?

    HintPista

Count from the top: the large name, the small line in English, and the cursive signature at the bottom.

  3. #3

What long dark garment covers the thin arms of the woman in profile in the sketch?

    HintPista

Look at the singer's arms, they go almost to the elbows and are shaded with dark strokes.
