What you would seeLo que verías

In the center of the image, set against a black background and a soft gray surface, stands a conical beaker of white porcelain, gently flaring toward the rim and slightly narrowed at the foot. The object is frontally lit and centered, which highlights its smooth, glossy glaze and the small chips along the upper rim that reveal its age. In the foreground, the front of the vessel displays a hand-painted floral decoration in an East Asian-inspired style: chrysanthemums in red, yellow and blue, a curved bamboo stem in green and blue, and small stylized rocks in blue, alongside two tufts of grass in green and ochre tied with a blue ribbon. The brushwork is fine and delicate, with thin dark outlines and vivid enamel colors. The background is completely dark at the top, fading to light gray below, creating a museum display effect. Soft lighting casts a faint shadow to the left. The scale feels intimate, like a drinking cup, and the texture appears fragile and slightly uneven, typical of soft-paste porcelain, with subtle irregularities at the rim.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the contrast between the pure white glaze and the bright floral enamels. Follow the arching stem that links the two clusters of flowers across the surface. Finish by noticing the tiny chips on the rim, traces of its long history.

Curious detailDato curioso

Mennecy soft-paste porcelain did not contain kaolin and was prized for its milky white tone that closely imitated imported Chinese porcelain in 18th-century Europe.

I look at this Mennecy-Villeroy beaker and focus on its fragility. It is soft-paste porcelain, made in France between 1725 and 1750, and its bright white glaze still looks smooth under the display light. I am drawn to the small nicks on the upper rim: they are not kiln flaws, but traces of time and use. The hand-painted enamel decoration, with chrysanthemums in red, yellow and blue, green and blue bamboo and stylized rocks, keeps vivid colors and very fine black outlines.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This truncated cone beaker reminds me of observing a lone planet in darkness. Against the black background and matte gray surface, the white porcelain looks illuminated like a moon. The shape is simple, flaring toward the mouth with a narrower base, without a handle, made to be held in the hand. The East Asian style floral decoration makes me think of constellations: scattered chrysanthemums, a curved bamboo stem and two grass patches tied with a blue ribbon floating on the bright emptiness of the glaze.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little cup without ears for tiny giants. It is white and shiny and has flowery drawings like from a cartoon. I see red, yellow and blue flowers, and a green stick that is bamboo bending over. At the bottom there are two little patches of green and yellow grass tied with a blue ribbon, and little blue stones. On the top edge it has tiny chips, as if someone used it a lot. I like it because it looks like a delicate treasure cup.
