six-panel folding screen; ink and color on gilded paper
What you would seeLo que verías
The work unfolds horizontally across six tall vertical panels, whose seams remain visible and divide the landscape like chapters. The background is a luminous expanse of gilded paper, shifting between pale gold and warm ochre, against which rocky masses in gray, rusty brown, and burnt orange rise and fall. In the lower left, a man in a white and reddish robe with a tall black court cap stands beside a black-and-white horse fitted with a red blanket and a green-and-gold saddle; he holds the reins and looks toward the center. Slender pines with green needles and twisted trunks climb along the left edge, while clusters of bright red ivy leaves drift across the rocks. Near the top center, partly cropped by a crag, a traveler in pale blue with a large woven pack or basket bends forward as he descends. At center right, a solitary courtier in a deep blue robe and black cap stands on a brown mound, his sleeve raised, facing left. Below him a gray river enters from the right in elegant concentric swirls, squeezing between stones. Small plants, mossy green patches, and a tiny red seal on the far left reward close looking.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin at the left with the horse and its attendant, then let the red ivy guide your eye diagonally toward the figure descending at the top. Pause on the courtier in blue at the center right: his stillness contrasts with the river swirling away beside him, as if the message were already slipping out of reach.
ContextContexto
Ivy Lane is a six-panel folding screen in ink and color on gilded paper by Fukae Roshū (1699–1757), made in Japan during the Edo period (1615–1868) in the 1700s. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it illustrates an episode from the tenth-century literary classic The Tales of Ise. On an ivy-covered pass on Mount Utsu, a courtier meets a Buddhist priest and entrusts him with a letter for a former lover in the capital, whom he can no longer see even in dreams. The Tales of Ise interweaves poems with a basic narrative of the journeys of a courtier in exile.

Curious detailDato curioso
According to the museum, Mount Utsu is a Japanese homonym for “Melancholy Mountain,” so the landscape itself names the courtier’s emotion before any figure expresses it.

If you step closer, you will see the image is not continuous, it is divided by the seams of six vertical panels that work like chapters. I work on golden paper, between pale gold and warm ochre, that lights the whole landscape. Notice how ink and color sit on that background: rocks in grey, reddish brown and burnt orange, pines with twisted trunks and that intense red ivy that seems to float. Down on the right the grey river with concentric swirls shows the brush control.

I like to read this screen as a night map of emotions. The golden background is like a luminous sky that needs no stars, and the dark rocks cut out constellations of color: the black and white horse with a red blanket, the courtier in deep blue on the brown mound, the light blue traveler with his woven load. Everything happens at the pass of Mount Utsu, covered in ivy, where time feels suspended. It is a landscape to get lost in and to find messages.

There is so much to discover if you look with a magnifying glass! On the left there is a man with a tall black hat leading a white horse with black spots, with a green and golden saddle and a little red blanket. Up top, another man in light blue clothes carries a giant basket on his back and climbs down carefully between the rocks. On the right there is a lonely man with his sleeve raised, like waving. And below the river makes swirls like snails, and the little red leaves seem to float like confetti.
