A horizontal rectangular fragment of cloth fills almost the entire image, photographed flat against a plain off-white background. The ground is a pale, muted celadon green, softly luminous, and covered with a fine repeat of tiny four-petalled dots in a slightly darker green. Across it run broad diagonal bands that undulate like ribbons or slow streams, rising from lower left to upper right. They are edged with scallops and filled with metallic thread that shifts between silvery beige, warm taupe and dark grey-brown where it catches less light or has tarnished. Along and between the bands grow delicate floral sprays: larger soft-focus roses or peonies, smaller five-petalled blossoms, buds, leaves and thin curling stems in dusty pink-beige and muted silver. Some areas show feathery, grass-like fringes beside the ribbons. The weave has a low satiny sheen and a slightly ribbed texture, with the pattern formed in the cloth rather than printed on its surface. The edges are uneven and lightly frayed, with loose threads below. A horizontal seam crosses the left side, and the lower right corner is clipped diagonally. The repeat is cut off at every side, making clear this is a surviving piece of a larger length.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Let your eye follow the diagonal metallic ribbons first, as if they were paths crossing a garden. Then step back to the small dotted ground and the scattered blossoms between the bands. Notice how the brightest areas are not painted on, but emerge from the weave itself as the light changes.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a length of textile made in France between 1723 and 1774 by an unknown maker, now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is a brocade woven in silk and metal thread. In eighteenth-century France, fabrics of this kind were luxury goods, probably intended for fashionable dress or interior furnishing, although the original use of this specific piece is not known. Its pale ground, flowing ribbons and naturalistic flowers are characteristic of the light, curving taste of the period. The fragment preserves the pattern's repeat, but not the full object it may once have been part of.

Curious detailDato curioso

The dark patches in the metallic bands are not always part of the original design: silver-wrapped threads tarnish over time, so a brocade that once flashed brightly can gradually turn grey-brown in places.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the textile change when light moves across its metallic threads rather than staying fixed in a photograph?¿Cómo cambia el textil cuando la luz se mueve sobre sus hilos metálicos, en vez de quedar fijo en una fotografía?
  2. What kind of garment or room can you imagine made from a pattern that is cut off at every edge here?¿Qué prenda o qué espacio imaginas confeccionado con un patrón que aquí aparece cortado por todos los bordes?
  3. Does the design feel more like a garden, a landscape with streams, or an abstract rhythm — and what leads you to that reading?¿El diseño se siente más como un jardín, un paisaje con arroyos o un ritmo abstracto, y qué te lleva a leerlo así?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I look at this rectangular fragment for what it is: an interrupted remainder. The celadon green ground is woven, not printed, with a tiny dotted pattern of four-petaled florets. I focus on the undulating diagonal bands with scalloped edges, woven in metallic thread that now looks silvery beige and brownish from wear and light. The frayed edges, the horizontal seam on the left and the diagonally cut corner tell me it was cut from a larger piece.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this textile as a pale sky. The celadon green ground is like a soft atmosphere sprinkled with little four-pointed stars. The diagonal bands crossing it remind me of ribbons of light or currents meandering slowly from one corner to the other, with a metallic sheen that shifts with the viewing angle, like bodies reflecting differently. The bouquets of roses and leaves look like floral constellations floating between those paths. It is a delicate map made of silk and metal.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a fairy blanket that got torn. The background is light green with teeny tiny flowers everywhere. Shiny ribbons cross it like wavy rivers with shell-like edges, going slanted from the bottom to the top. Around them there are bunches of pinkish flowers, little leaves and curly stems that look like they are floating. At the bottom there are loose threads and on one side a little seam. You can tell it is just a small piece of something much bigger.

  1. #1

What light color is the background of the fabric where the tiny little flowers float?

    HintPista

It is a soft muted green, like milky tea, that covers almost the whole cloth.

  2. #2

What shiny bands with a shell-like edge cross the fabric diagonally like rivers?

    HintPista

They are wide, they wave from the lower left to the upper right and are made with metallic thread.

  3. #3

Look closely at the background: what tiny little flowers form the dotted pattern repeated all over the cloth?

    HintPista

They are not the large roses, they are the tiny dots covering the light green.
