The Ponte dell'Abbadia at VulciEl Ponte dell'Abbadia en Vulci

What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal landscape drawing in graphite on aged, cream-colored paper, drawn with fine, pale lines that are sometimes barely visible. Occupying the middle ground, a large stone bridge crosses the sheet from left to right; its great central arch, built of carefully indicated blocks and bricks, forms a near semicircle left empty inside. To the left, the bridge continues as a lower, more fragmented wall; to the right, it rises toward a group of buildings crowned by a tall, narrow tower with small openings, an arched niche, and an irregular top. The handling shifts across the sheet: the masonry is described brick by brick in places, while other areas are only suggested. In the foreground, irregular rocks, sparse vegetation, and broken, angular lines suggest uneven terrain and, probably, the riverbed below the bridge, without defining it fully. The upper half is almost entirely blank paper, serving as a bright, quiet sky with no clouds. The overall effect is delicate and unfinished, like an on-site sketch. Small details reward slow looking: tufts of grass on the bridge, tiny windows, a secondary arch on the right, dark accents in the foliage, and creases and stains in the paper.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the great central arch and follow its curve until you reach the tower on the right. Then look down at the foreground: where the drawing becomes looser, the landscape feels closer and less finished. Notice how much of the sky and the river is simply blank paper.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is *The Ponte dell'Abbadia at Vulci*, a graphite drawing by French artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867), dated to the first half of the 19th century and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, with credit to the Dudley P. Allen Fund. Vulci, in present-day Italy, is known as an ancient Etruscan site, and the Ponte dell'Abbadia is a historic bridge in that area. The exact date and circumstances of this sheet are not given in the source; it was probably made as a direct study of the site, as 19th-century artists often recorded architecture and landscapes while traveling.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: in the lower right corner there is a small oval stamp in blue ink with the initials “G.C” and the handwritten number “114”, a collector's mark that forms part of the sheet's later history, distinct from the graphite drawing itself.

I pause at how fragile the creamy paper feels and how pale the graphite is, as if it might fade away. This stone bridge holds itself with a large central arch drawn patiently, with individual ashlars and bricks, while other areas are barely hinted at. I notice how the white of the paper becomes a luminous sky and how creases and stains show the passage of time. It is a delicate, unfinished sketch made outdoors, asking us to look slowly to find the grass on the wall and the tiny windows.

I see this bridge as a horizon cut against a huge emptiness. The upper half is just blank paper, a cloudless sky that feels infinite and silent, like watching at dawn. The large semicircular arch is almost air, an incomplete circle that lets light through. To the right, the tall narrow tower points upward, like a rustic observatory. Everything is drawn with fine, precise lines, yet much is left undrawn, inviting us to imagine what lies beyond what is visible.

It looks like a giant bridge drawn with a very light pencil on an old sheet of paper. It has a huge arch in the middle that looks like a giant door for giants. On one side it looks a bit broken and on the other there are little houses with a tall skinny tower. Below there are pointy rocks and little plants. On top they drew nothing and that is the sky. I like hunting for hidden things like the tiny little windows, the small arch on the side and the little weeds growing on top of the bridge.
