What you would seeLo que verías
At the centre of the image, against a background that fades from black at the top to soft grey below, stands a small glossy white porcelain figure on a pedestal. The light falls from the front and above, creating bright reflections on the glaze and a faint shadow to the right of the base. The pedestal is low, wide and roughly octagonal, with stepped mouldings and a slightly worn, creamy surface. On it stands an older male figure with a very large head, short legs and a compact body. He wears a soft cap, long hair falling at the sides, a full beard and moustache, a knotted neckcloth, a waistcoat or shirt, baggy breeches and rounded shoes. A long coat hangs open over his shoulders and reaches almost to his feet. His right hand, close to his chest, grips what may be the coat or a staff; his left arm extends slightly outward with the hand loosely closed. His face is deeply modelled: furrowed brow, heavy eyes looking upward, prominent nose and mouth partly hidden by the beard. The modelling is not smooth everywhere; folds, fingers and facial features emerge from small ridges and hollows. The scale feels intimate and fragile, like an object made to be picked up and examined at close range.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the disproportion between the large, furrowed head and the short body, then move down to the small hands and shoes resting on the pedestal. Notice how the open coat frames the figure like a stage curtain: that theatrical framing shifts the reading from a simple portrait toward satire from another era.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this small figure was made around 1720 at the Meissen porcelain factory in Germany, founded around 1710. It was produced in the slightly yellowish porcelain developed by Böttger and used during the factory's first decade. It belongs to a series adapted from engravings in the manner of Jacques Callot, the 17th-century French printmaker known for grotesque and theatrical characters. It is thought to have been modelled by Georg Fritzsche, employed at Meissen from 1712; that attribution is probable, not certain. The work is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

I pause on the surface of this Meissen figurine from around 1720. I see that slightly yellowish Böttger porcelain, creamy, with its glossy glaze and the intense highlights left by the frontal light. The low, almost octagonal pedestal shows stepped moldings and tiny specks of wear that speak of its age and its fragility. Every fold of the coat, every finger and every feature of the beard is modeled in relief, and I think about how delicate it is to preserve these hollows without dust or cracks building up.

This little figure makes me think about how we look at small things. It stands against a background that fades from black at the top to soft gray below, like an evening sky. Light comes from the front and above, like a focused sun that creates bright spots on the glaze and a faint shadow to the right of the base. The character with a large head and compact body, with an upward gaze and furrowed brow, seems to be watching something distant. I imagine him as a theatrical wise man gazing at the stars from his intimate pedestal.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
He looks like a tiny funny grandpa! He has a huge head, super short legs and a really long coat that almost covers his round shoes. He wears a soft cap, a big beard and a little scarf around his neck. One hand holds his coat and the other looks ready to wave hello. He stands on a little cake-like base with about eight sides. He is so shiny, as if he were wet, and I want to hold him carefully in my hand to see him up close and find all his little folds.
