What you would seeLo que verías

A print in dark brown ink on intense yellow paper, in vertical format. In the foreground, slightly off-center to the left, two children sit close together occupying the lower half. On the left, a boy with a closely cropped head, seen in profile, looks downward with a faint frown; he wears a closed-collar jacket and his hands rest on his knees. Beside him, a girl with wavy, shoulder-length hair rests her chin on both fists, elbows on her knees; her gaze is low and melancholic, her face modeled with soft shading and granular, speckled areas. Her dark, voluminous skirt anchors the composition at the bottom. Behind them, to the right, a slender tree with a dark trunk and twisted branches extends toward the center; among its branches the face of a woman in a hat peeks out, barely sketched, as if spying. In the background, at the upper left, a wooden fence and a stone wall are suggested with very light, almost ghostly lines. The light is flat and even, typical of zincography, with textures alternating between nervous linework and dotted, grainy passages from lithography. The artist's signature appears reversed in the lower right corner, a mark of the printing process.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the children's faces in the foreground and notice the contrast between their physical closeness and their isolated, downcast expressions. Then move your eye up to the dark tree and spot the hidden face among the branches, which turns an intimate scene into something quietly unsettling. Finally observe the barely drawn background, which leaves the figures suspended in an empty yellow void with no clear horizon.

ContextContexto

Work by French painter and printmaker Paul Gauguin (1848–1903), made in 1889 as part of the Volpini Suite. According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, it is a zincograph, a lithographic technique on zinc plate that Gauguin explored at that time. The Volpini Suite, named after the exhibition at the Café Volpini during the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris, comprises eleven prints with Breton and Symbolist themes. The title Misères Humaines refers to the melancholy and rural poverty the artist observed in Brittany. No detailed description is provided in the source, so the exact narrative content is not recorded, but the image is characteristic of his synthetic style of the late 1880s.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Volpini Suite was printed on striking canary-yellow paper chosen by Gauguin himself, and only a few complete sets from 1889 are known to survive; the color is not decorative but an essential part of the work.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I am drawn to the intense yellow paper and the dark brown ink Gauguin used in this zincography from 1889 from the Volpini Suite. I notice the granular texture of lithography on zinc, with nervous lines and dotted areas, and how the flat even light reveals every fiber. The inverted signature in the lower right corner reminds me of the printing process and the care this light sensitive support requires.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I am used to scanning backgrounds, and here I am intrigued by what is barely visible. The image is vertical and almost everything is human figures in the foreground, two seated children with downcast eyes. Behind them the thin tree with twisted branches seems to cut the sky, though the light is flat and shadowless. At the upper left I make out the wooden fence and stone wall drawn with such a faint line they feel like constellations waiting to be found.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see two little kids sitting very close together and they make me feel a little sad. The boy on the left has a shaved head and looks down with his hands on his knees. The girl rests her chin on both fists and also looks down, like she is bored or melancholic. They wear dark clothes and behind them there is a crooked tree. Between the branches a tiny hidden face with a hat peeks out as if playing at spying on us.
