As a conservator I focus on the heavily tarnished surface of this fourth-century silver lamp, mottled with gray, black and whitish patches that give it a rough matte texture very different from polished silver. The elongated teardrop body is hollow to hold oil and narrows toward the oval nozzle on the right, while at the center there is a circular opening with a ridged rim and a thin vertical spike to secure the lid. The S-shaped handle ending in a horse head with wavy mane and modeled eyes shows fine craftsmanship and a rare luxury compared to simple clay lamps.

I like to think of this lamp as a small companion for fourth-century nights, made to give light when there was no electric light or street lamps. Its rounded belly held oil and the wick showed through the oval hole of the raised nozzle, giving a flickering flame like a nearby star. The circular opening in the center with its vertical spike let the owner refill the fuel and hold the lid in place, and by mounting it on a pedestal its light could be moved around the room, just as today we move a lamp to read under the dark sky.

This lamp has a little horse! On the left side the handle curves like an S and becomes a horse looking to the right with ears up and mouth open as if neighing. It has a mane with lots of little curls and a collar with two incised bands around the neck. The body looks like a chubby droplet ending in a little spout with a dark hole for the wick. On top there is a round little dish with a thin spike standing in the middle. It is all silvery but speckled with gray and black as if it had freckles.
