What you would seeLo que verías
A large crow perched on a horizontal branch dominates the center of this vertical drawing on aged, yellowish paper. Its plumage is built from dense black ink strokes, with white highlights on the head, neck, and breast; it has a long, pale, slightly open beak, round attentive eyes, whisker-like fine feathers around the face, and strong claws gripping the bark. To the right, pressed against a thick, twisted trunk with swirling grain and bare branches, sits a small fantastical creature in profile: pointed ear, upright tuft of hair, long nose, round eye, striped collar, buttoned shirt, long limbs, oversized flat feet, and what seems to be a bushy tail. Its hands clutch the branch and its posture is tense, as if listening or waiting. The branch stretches toward the left and ends in dry, curving twigs. Behind them, the sky is pale blue and cream, crossed by thin cloud outlines. In the lower third opens a tiny rural landscape: bare trees, plowed fields with parallel furrows, hedges, distant hills, and a winding road where a horse draws a cart driven by a small figure. The artist's signature appears at lower left. Pencil lines, ink hatching, and faint watercolor-like washes create rough, fibrous textures.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the crow's eyes and beak, which pull you in from the center, then move right toward the small creature clinging to the trunk. Notice how they share the same branch but do not look at each other. Finally, drop your gaze to the landscape below: that change of scale turns a perch in a tree into a whole world.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is A Squirrel and a Crow (1913), a drawing in ink and graphite by British artist Arthur Rackham (1867–1939), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art as a gift of Mrs. Don Hunter. Rackham was one of the best-known illustrators of the so-called Golden Age of book illustration in Britain, famed for his gnarled trees, fairy-tale creatures, and densely hatched line. The source does not state whether this sheet was made for a specific book or story, so its exact narrative is not known; it probably belongs to the realm of fable and fantasy that he illustrated so often.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual fact: the horse pulling the cart at the bottom is drawn smaller than the crow in the foreground, an exaggeration of distance that makes the bird feel monumental.

This yellowed, aged paper tells me a lot at first glance. I notice the cross-hatching in ink and graphite, those dense interwoven strokes that build the crow's plumage and the swirling grain of the twisted trunk. I am drawn to the white reserves left on the bird's head and chest, and to the pale washes of the cream and soft blue sky. The signature at the lower left anchors this 1913 sheet. The surface shows rough, fibrous textures, typical of a drawing preserved with care yet marked by time.

I look at this vertical drawing as if it were a sky divided into layers. At the top the pale cream and soft blue crossed by thin cloud outlines, in the middle the horizontal branch where the large crow seems to keep watch with its half-open pale beak and attentive eyes. The small creature clinging to the trunk seems to be listening. Below, in the lower third, a tiny rural landscape opens with plowed fields, distant hills and a winding road. It reminds me how near and far coexist, like in a telescopic view.

So weird and fun! There is a huge crow with little whiskers and strong claws gripping a branch, and beside it a tiny creature with pointy ears, a buttoned shirt and super big flat feet! It looks like they are sharing a secret. The tree is all twisty and crooked. If you look way down there is a teeny landscape with a horse pulling a cart along a winding path. It feels a bit spooky but also makes me want to make up a story about what they are saying to each other.
