What you would seeLo que verías
A black-and-white etching depicting a vast vaulted hall seen in frontal, slightly split perspective across two naves. In the foreground, numerous tiny figures in period costume — wigs, cloaks and hats suggestive of the 17th or 18th century — mingle and converse at ground level. Their small scale emphasizes the monumental height of the barrel vaults above, rendered with extremely fine parallel lines marking ribs and transverse wooden or iron beams. On both sides, lateral walls feature Gothic arches and windows, with a procession of crowned statues attached to pilasters receding into deep perspective toward the back. The light is even and diffuse, without dramatic shadows, highlighting the linear craft of etching: cross-hatching, stippling and regular strokes that convey textures of stone and timber. A thick central pillar partially divides the view, creating two symmetrical vaults that open like tunnels. The draftsmanship is meticulous and almost architectural, attentive to the rhythmic repetition of columns, horizontal tie-rods and slender hanging lamps.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the two large arches framing the top and follow the lines of the beams receding to the back to feel the depth. Then lower your gaze to the tiny figures and the rows of statues, whose steady repetition reveals the contrast between monumental architecture and human presence.

I focus on Meryon's etching technique from 1855. Look at the very fine parallel lines that build the barrel vaults and transverse beams, all rendered with cross-hatching and stippling to texture the stone. The black and white is not flat: grays are built through line density. I love how the even, diffuse light reveals wear and monumentality without drama, letting the architectural linework take center stage while the tiny 18th-century figures simply anchor the human scale.

I see this hall as an inner sky. The two vaulted naves open like tunnels toward infinity, with the central pillar splitting the perspective like a meridian. The hanging lamps are like aligned stars marking depth, and the crowned statues parade like constellations along the pillars. The crowd below looks tiny under such vastness, just like us beneath the celestial dome. Meryon draws space with almost scientific precision and a romantic melancholy.

This hall is huge! The ceiling is so tall that people look like tiny ants in wigs and capes chatting around. There are two big tunnels with little lines and a fat pillar in the middle splitting everything. I like counting the little crowned statues stuck to the pillars and the long lamps hanging down. Everything is made of tiny lines, as if someone drew it very patiently to make it look like an endless castle.
