What you would seeLo que verías
The image presents the two sides of a single sheet, side by side. On the left, the recto, a wide lake fills the lower half and reflects a pale, almost empty sky. A wooded, rolling hill curves along the far shore in a soft arc, drawn with many short strokes and small dots suggesting trees and scrub. In the foreground, a sloping bank holds sparse bushes, a twisted small tree just right of center, darker tufts of grass, and a few faint rocks. On the right, the verso, several Roman ruins stand on a flat, high horizon line: a large blocky structure with arches and a ruined top, a smaller arch beside it, and a broken tower farther right. Bare and leafy trees are scattered sparsely. The lower two-thirds of this side are nearly empty, with only ghostly brown smudges on the blue-gray paper. Both drawings use fine brown ink lines and washes of brown and blue-green on aged, slightly mottled paper with worn edges. Small stains, faint sketches, and areas where the color has shifted are visible if you look slowly. No people or animals appear; the scale feels intimate, like quick notes made on a small sheet.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the diptych as a whole to notice that both scenes share the same blue paper and brown ink. Then compare the open water on the left with the empty foreground on the right. Finally, look for the small trees and arched openings: they set the scale and turn simple sketches into places.
ContextContexto
This is an Italian drawing dated to around 1650, by an unknown artist, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. The source lists pen and brown ink with brush and blue wash, in places discolored to green, and a trace of red chalk unrelated to the composition. One side shows Lake Nemi and the other a small group of Roman ruins; both subjects were very common in Italian landscape drawing of the period. It is not known who made the sheet, whether it was drawn outdoors, or what its original purpose was. It was probably a study or record of places, rather than a finished work meant for display.

Curious detailDato curioso
The blue wash has discolored to green in places over time, as the museum itself notes, so some of the greens visible today were probably not the artist's original color.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What changes when we realize the lake and the ruins are on opposite sides of the same sheet, and not two separate works?¿Qué cambia al saber que el lago y las ruinas están en caras opuestas de la misma hoja, y no son dos obras separadas?
- Why might a drawing leave so much paper empty, in the water, the sky, and the foreground of the ruins?¿Por qué un dibujo puede dejar tanto papel vacío en el agua, el cielo y el primer plano de las ruinas?
- How does the discoloration of the blue wash affect the mood and the season we imagine in these landscapes?¿Cómo afecta la decoloración de la aguada azul al ambiente y a la estación que imaginamos en estos paisajes?

What draws me in is the paper itself. It is a grayish blue sheet now speckled and worn at the edges, with little stains all over. If you look closely you will see the brown ink applied with a very fine pen, topped with blue washes that now look greenish in some areas — that is natural fading over time. There is also a trace of red chalk that is not part of the composition. All of this tells me it is a fragile study, an object that has lived a long time and must be looked at carefully so you do not mistake a stain for a line.

I see two different skies on a single sheet and I love that. On the left, over Lake Nemi, the sky is pale and vast, almost empty, and the water below reflects it like a calm mirror. On the right, above the ruins, the horizon is high and flat and the sky weighs over the arches and the broken tower. There are no people or stars, just air and silence. It makes me think about how seventeenth century draftsmen also observed the sky, light and distance, just as we do when we look through a telescope.

It looks like a little drawing with two sides, like a trick card. On one side there is a big calm lake with a hill full of tiny trees made of dots, and in front there is a crooked little tree that looks like it is balancing. On the other side there are broken castles with arches and a tower with no top, and bare trees. There are no people or puppies, just ruins and plants. I like it because it looks small and quick, as if someone drew it while going for a walk and then flipped the paper over to keep drawing.

If you look at the ruins side, how many large and small arches can you count between the massive building and the one next to it?
HintPista
Find the large ruin with the crumbling top and right next to it a smaller structure with an arch-shaped opening.

What color does the wash that was originally blue now appear in some areas due to discoloration?
HintPista
Look at the washes over the brown ink, the shift in tone is most noticeable on the hills and sky.
