etching and engraving, hand colored
What you would seeLo que verías
A hand-colored etching and engraving on aged cream paper, with wide margins and a thin ruled border enclosing the image. The bouquet is arranged on a strong diagonal rising from the lower left toward the upper left, leaving a large expanse of pale ivory background. In the foreground, four large double blossoms dominate with ruffled petals in salmon, brick red and greenish yellow centers, their dense, fluffy texture suggesting peonies or chrysanthemums. Dark green stems with finely hatched, serrated leaves weave between them, the black engraved lines still visible beneath the wash. Extending upward, a tall stem bears pale blue bellflowers with yellow throats and purplish veining, some seen frontally, others in profile, their bell-shaped corollas delicately shaded. Scattered among them are small white star-shaped flowers with five petals and yellowish centers, plus tiny pendant violet flowers near the lower left. The light is even and diffuse, typical of botanical illustration, without cast shadows. The hand coloring is warm and slightly irregular, with green pigment bleeding just outside the printed outlines and thick yellow dabs for pollen. At the lower left a faint cursive inscription is barely legible. The sheet shows light foxing spots and gently cockled edges, evidence of its age.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow the main diagonal of blue bellflowers from the top down into the dense heart of the bouquet. Then notice the contrast between the large, fluffy orange-red double blooms and the small white and violet star flowers tucked around them. Finally look closely at how the black printed lines peek through the watercolor, revealing the hand of the colorist.
ContextContexto
This print is attributed to Jean-Baptiste I Monnoyer (French, c. 1636–1699), a celebrated flower painter to the court of Louis XIV, dated to about 1680–95. It is an etching and engraving hand-colored after printing, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to source information, seventeenth-century botanical illustration flourished as interest shifted to growing beautiful rather than merely useful plants, formal gardens were laid out like embroidery, and Dutch colonial trade brought exotic species to Europe. In that period the number of known plants rose from about 500 in the mid-16th century to 6,000 a century later. Its precise original use is not documented, but it probably served as a model for embroidery, decoration or botanical study.

Curious detailDato curioso
In the 17th century the number of plant species known in Europe multiplied twelvefold in under a hundred years, from about 500 to 6,000, partly thanks to French royal gardens such as those at Fontainebleau and the Louvre noted in the source.

When I look at this bouquet I first notice the paper: that aged cream tone with soft foxing spots and wavy edges tells me about almost 350 years of life. The black engraved line holds everything together, but the hand-applied color slips slightly outside the outline, especially in the leaf greens and the thick yellow pollen. That irregularity is beautiful, it proves a hand illuminated each print. I worry about how even the light already softened the salmon and blue tones, so in the gallery it needs strong protection.

This bouquet feels like a constellation on an ivory sky. The engraver left a huge empty background, like the space between stars, and the bouquet rises diagonally like a milky way of flowers. If I count, there are four large suns in salmon and brick tones, the peonies, and higher up pale blue bellflowers that look like small nebulae with yellow centers. The little white star-shaped flowers with five points are literally scattered stars. It is a botanical map where each bloom is a celestial body waiting to be discovered.

It looks like a magic bouquet floating in the air! The four big fluffy flowers in the middle are like peach-colored pom-poms with yellow-green centers, I want to touch them. I like the blue little bells with purple stripes hanging like tiny lamps and the small white star-shaped flowers. The green stems have leaves with tiny teeth on the edges. Down below there are little purple flowers hiding. Everything is on an old cream-colored paper like my grandma has.
