What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows both sides of a single manuscript leaf, one above the other, against a plain white background. The support is extremely long and narrow, with gently rounded ends, like a flattened ribbon. Its surface is pale beige and tan, with visible fibers, soft stains, worn edges, and slight irregularities typical of prepared palm leaf. Most of the space is covered by dense lines of small black script, arranged in blocks that flow from end to end. Two small circular binding holes interrupt the writing, surrounded by small blank margins left by the scribe. On the upper side, near the center, the text is interrupted by a small rectangular miniature on a deep red ground. Within it stands a light-skinned figure in profile, adorned and wearing patterned garments, amid dark stylized vegetation resembling a palm or a tree; the antelope named in the title belongs to this same small scene, although it is hard to distinguish at this scale. The lower side has no painting: only continuous lines of text, divided by the holes and by changes in spacing. The contrast between the warm, aged leaf, the orderly black ink, and the single burst of red, green, and ochre in the miniature gives the object a quiet, fragile presence.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, follow the long horizontal shape and notice how the writing flows around the binding holes and the painting. Then move to the small red panel and look for the human figure and the antelope beside the vegetation. That tiny scene, set within dense lines of text, changes the leaf from a writing surface into an image to be contemplated.

ContextContexto

This is folio 73 of a Gandavyuha-sutra, dated by the source to the 1000s–1100s and attributed to Nepal. It was painted with gum tempera and ink on palm leaf and is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. The Gandavyuha is a Mahayana Buddhist text centered on Sudhana, a young pilgrim who travels in search of teachings on the path to enlightenment. Pothi-format manuscripts, made of long, narrow leaves stacked and bound together, were widely used in South Asia. The specific episode illustrated here is not described in the source, so it cannot be identified with certainty beyond the title's reference to Sudhana and an antelope.

Curious detailDato curioso

The small holes visible in the leaf were not damage in origin: in manuscripts of this format, cords could pass through them to hold the stacked leaves together between covers.

If you look closely, the support is not paper but prepared palm leaf, with visible fibers, soft stains and worn edges shaped by time. I love how the scribe left small blank margins around the two circular binding holes so the text could breathe. That gesture shows care. The contrast between the pale beige of the leaf, the tidy black ink and the single red rectangle of the miniature feels fragile and yet very resilient, as if it had survived a thousand years holding its breath.

I like to think of this leaf as a portable night sky. The dense lines of writing are like tidy constellations stretching from one end of this long palm-leaf ribbon to the other. And right at the center, that burst of intense red in the miniature is like a nebula interrupting the regularity. I picture young Sudhana on his pilgrimage as a traveler following stars. The pothi manuscript, with its two binding holes, is a map to avoid getting lost on a very long journey toward awakening.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This leaf looks like a giant, very old cookie-colored ruler. It is full of tiny little black letters that look like ants marching in line. It has two round little holes as if someone punched it to tie it with a string. The prettiest part is the little red square in the middle, with a light-skinned man and green plants, and somewhere in there a hidden antelope even though you can barely see it. I like that there is only one colorful picture because it makes you search for it like treasure.
