What you would seeLo que verías
The object is shown frontally, centered against a graduated background that shifts from near-black gray at the top to pale gray below, with no other object to provide a sense of scale. It is a vertical slab of gray stone, rectangular in outline, with rounded upper and lower corners and slightly irregular edges. Its surface is rough and grainy, with tiny pores, darker patches, and faint pinkish traces, especially in a horizontal band near the base. At the top is a raised, smooth disk, like a flattened sphere. Below it, carved in relief, a thick-bodied snake crosses over itself to form an X and then bends into a broad U toward the bottom. Its skin is marked with a diamond lattice imitating scales. On the left, the head, or a motif intertwined with it, shows curved forms and a spiral; on the right, the raised end finishes in a detailed rattle made of small circles. Beneath the body is a horizontal bar divided into segments and, below that, four circles in a row. At the very bottom, two broad, low supports project outward, characteristic of a metate, with the four dots repeated between them.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the snake's crossed body and the diamond pattern of its scales. Then look down to the bar and the four dots that turn the image into a number. Finally, notice the two low feet at the base: they reveal that this carved slab is also a miniature metate.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is a miniature stone metate by an unknown maker, dated to 700–1000, in the Classic period, probably connected with Xochicalco in present-day Morelos, central Mexico. The decoration is on its underside. The bar and four dots below the snake represent the number nine in the style attributed to Xochicalco, while the rattlesnake recalls contemporary carvings from Veracruz. The source suggests that "9 Rattlesnake" may have been a person's name or a date in Xochicalco's poorly understood calendar. Its exact use and its patron are not known. It is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Hoy pertenece al Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
The sign for nine is not written as a single numeral: it combines one bar, worth five, with four dots, worth one each.

I pause in front of this vertical slab of gray stone and focus on its rough, grainy surface, full of pores and darker mottling. What we are seeing here is the underside of the metate, not the grinding surface. That plump, smooth disk at the top intrigues me, so polished compared to the porous body of the stone. And those faint pinkish remains near the base, perhaps pigment or traces of use. The serpent in relief crosses its body in an X and then forms a U, and the diamond grid of its scales is still sharply preserved.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer I am fascinated that this small stone, shown with no scale reference, can hold both a name and a date at once. Below the rattlesnake there is a segmented horizontal bar and four circles in a row, which according to the source represent the number nine in the style attributed to Xochicalco. Together with the serpent, that reads as 9 Rattlesnake. To me it is a reminder of how in Mesoamerica the Classic period calendar, between 700 and 1000 CE, wove time, sky and personal identity into a single carved sign.

It is like a stone with a hidden snake underneath! At first I see a gray slab with rounded corners, but if you flip it over it has a chubby snake that crosses like an X and then drops down making a huge U. I like its little diamond skin and its rattle on the right with tiny dots. On top it has a round pillow shape and at the bottom two tiny metate feet. Between the feet there are four little dots and above them a little bar. Could it be a secret code from a long time ago?

What smooth, bulging shape sticks out at the top of the slab?
HintPista
It is centered above the serpent, it looks like a flattened sphere and contrasts with the rough stone.
