What you would seeLo que verías

In the center of a vertical sheet of cream-colored paper, slightly yellowed and with irregular, worn edges, a branch runs diagonally from the top center to the lower right. Its stem shifts from reddish brown at the tip to grayish green, with small pale marks and a cleanly cut base. Five large, oval leaves with smooth edges spread around it; they range from deep green in the foreground to yellowish and bluish greens in the leaves turned toward the back. Each leaf shows a light central vein and finer branching veins that give it volume and an almost silky surface. Light falls softly, without harsh shadows, emphasizing the leaves' sheen against the nearly empty background. Toward the lower part of the stem grow three small, round, speckled red fruits on short stalks. Beneath the branch, separated as study specimens, lie two halved fruits: one red and textured, the other pale, with its section facing upward. In the upper right corner reads “Tab. L.” At the bottom, a caption in Latin italics begins with “FICUS.” The overall scale is generous: the leaves dominate the page and give the plant a calm, monumental presence.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the stem from top to bottom and notice how the leaves alternate around it. Then look for the small red fruits: their scale changes the reading of the branch. Finally, move down to the two cut fruits, where the scientific study continues outside the main plant.

ContextContexto

This print, No. 50 — Ficus, comes from Plantae Selectae, published between 1750 and 1773. It is credited to Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708–1770), one of the most renowned botanical illustrators of the 18th century, and Christopher Jacob Trew (1695–1769), a German physician and botanist who promoted the project. It is a hand-colored engraving, typical of a period when printed images still relied on manual coloring to convey the tones of leaves and fruit. The exact species of Ficus shown is not specified in the source data, so it should not be identified more precisely.

Curious detailDato curioso

What we call the fruit of a fig tree is a syconium: a fleshy, hollow structure that encloses numerous tiny flowers inside, which is why the cut specimens at the bottom reveal a densely packed interior.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does showing whole and cut fruits together allow us to understand that the branch alone would not?¿Qué permite comprender la presencia conjunta de frutos enteros y cortados que no mostraría solo la rama?
  2. How does balance between scientific accuracy and visual beauty work in this image?¿Cómo se equilibra en esta imagen la exactitud científica con la belleza visual?

I pause on the creamy, slightly yellowish paper with its irregular worn edges that holds this diagonal branch. I notice how the hand-applied color brings life to the five large leaves, from intense green to yellowish and bluish tones, with their pale midrib and almost silky surface. The stem shifts from reddish brown to grayish green and the three small mottled red fruits keep their shine. I admire the work of Ehret and Trew between 1750 and 1773 to achieve such serenity with fragile means.

Like someone watching the sky, I look for order in this vertical plate. The branch crosses diagonally toward the lower right corner like a contained orbit, with five leaves opening like planets of different brightness. The soft light without harsh shadows recalls the clarity of a morning observation, and the almost empty background lets the plant breathe. The three red fruits and the two cut fruits below look like phase studies. At the upper right the mark Tab. L. and below the legend FICUS anchor the image like coordinates.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This branch is huge! It has five enormous leaves that look like bright green ears, some darker and some lighter. The little stick where they grow is reddish brown at the top and grayish green at the bottom, and it has three red dotted balls hanging like candies. Below there are two little cut fruits, one red and one whitish facing up. Everything is on old creamy paper. I like it because it looks calm and very tidy, as if the plant were posing for a photo.
