What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal black-ink etching on cream paper, with a fine plate mark and the artist's signature below the lower right corner. In the foreground, a wide cobbled road of irregular slabs winds from the bottom edge toward the center, flanked by stratified rock, broken walls, and the fallen capital of an ancient column at lower left. Dark, rolling bands of dense hatching form the hills, contrasting with the pale, finely lined stone of the buildings. Midway up, the road narrows, passes a rocky outcrop, and leads to arched gates in a massive crenellated wall with towers and machicolations. Behind and above it rises an enormous Gothic cathedral, with flying buttresses, tall windows, transepts, and unfinished or ruined-looking towers against a lightly toned sky. To the right, further walls, houses, and towers recede; to the lower right sits a small stone fountain or shrine with water trickling into a basin. Almost lost on the left slope are a lone standing figure and a small group of goats or sheep, tiny beside the architecture. The light is even and diffuse, with no strong shadows, so scale, line density, and texture — rough rock, smooth ashlar, soft dark vegetation — carry the whole scene.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the cobbled road in the foreground and follow it uphill until it disappears beneath the gates. Then look for the tiny human and animal figures on the left: they change a monumental view into a measure of distance. Finally, compare the crisp cathedral stonework with the dark, almost velvety hills that support it.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, Sarras is an etching by British artist Frederick Landseer Maur Griggs (1876-1938), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art as a gift of J. Byers Hays. The date given, 1891-1938, is very broad, so the exact year of this print is not known from these records. Griggs is generally associated with early 20th-century British etching and with visionary images of medieval architecture. Sarras is probably not a real place: in Arthurian tradition it is a legendary distant city linked to the Holy Grail, which fits this fortified cathedral rising, remote and self-contained, above an empty landscape.

Curious detailDato curioso

In Arthurian legend, Sarras is the faraway city where the Holy Grail is taken after its quest; Griggs turns that literary destination into a city you seem able to reach by road, yet never quite enter.

I focus on technique: black ink on cream paper, with a clear plate mark and the signature at the lower right. The contrast between the darkly hatched hills and the pale, finely lined stonework shows great control of the acid on the plate. Light is diffuse with no hard shadows, so volume relies entirely on line density. I am fascinated by how he renders rough rock against smooth ashlar and soft, dark vegetation using only etching.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This city seems to float beneath an almost empty, lightly toned sky, as if time has stood still. The gothic cathedral with its unfinished-looking towers rises high behind crenellated walls, arches and towers, while a cobbled path winds between stratified rock and ruined walls. The human scale is tiny: a lone figure and a few little goats. It reminds me that in Arthurian legend Sarras is a distant place linked to the Grail, unreachable under a silent firmament.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The road is huge and looks made of big wobbly stones that go up and up to arched gates in an enormous wall. At the top there is a giant cathedral with lots of points and tall windows that looks like a castle. On the left there is a fallen piece of a column and rough rocks, and down on the right there is a tiny fountain with water. You can barely see it, but on the hillside there is a little person standing and some very tiny goats. Everything is in black and white on light paper.

It is not pure white, it is a warm light tone visible in the borders and on the smooth stonework.
