What you would seeLo que verías

The artwork presents two graphite sketches on light ochre paper, shown one above the other as the recto and verso of a single sheet. In the upper sketch, a dense cluster of figures dominates the center: women in full crinolines and bonnets adorned with flowers, men in long tailcoats, capes and top hats, some paired in conversation, others carrying luggage. To the left a carriage wheel and figures with parasols are visible; to the right people sit on the ground near trunks with horses loosely suggested by quick strokes. The background hints at a landing stage with faintly drawn masts and canvas tents. The lower sketch is lighter and more open, with a two-horse carriage in the middle, a driver handling the reins and a woman seated above; on the left two crouching figures, on the right a small resting group and a boat mast with a fluttering flag. The sheet shows staining, adhesive tape at the edges, and hurried, sketchy linework with trembling contours that convey movement and waiting. The light is even and diffuse, without strong shading, typical of a pencil study made on the spot, and the overall scale feels intimate, like a pocket sketchbook page.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the fashionable couple at the center of the upper sketch, then let your eye wander to the smaller waiting poses at the edges. In the lower sketch follow the line of the horses toward the ship mast to grasp the harbor space. Notice how a few economical strokes suggest crowd, costume and motion.

ContextContexto

This work is by Heinrich von Mayr (German, 1806–1871) and is dated to the second or third quarter of the 1800s, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is housed in the Drawings department as part of the Bequest of Leonard C. Hanna Jr. Made in graphite, it belongs to 19th-century German culture and bears the title Passengers for Rhine Steamer on both sides of the sheet. The subject reflects the rise of Rhine river tourism by steamboat, a popular activity at the time that attracted artists interested in everyday travelers. No further specific information about the exact date, location or circumstances of the sketch is given in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

The sheet still bears mounting tape and age spots from its history, and a small pencil inscription is visible in the lower left corner of the lower sketch, showing it was a working field page rather than a finished drawing.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the pale ochre paper and how the graphite lands with different pressure, denser on top and lighter below. I notice stains, tape along the edges and trembling lines that are not after a perfect finish but after catching the moment. I see loose strokes for the crinolines, top hats and parasols, and just a few lines for the horses and trunks. Everything points to a sketch made on the spot, quickly, to hold the movement of waiting.

When I look at these sketches I think of people waiting to depart, like those who wait for night to observe. Up top the compact group with crinolines, frock coats and top hats seems to measure time by chatting beside trunks and parasols, with a carriage wheel at one side. Below the carriage with two horses and the mast with a flag marks another departure point. It is nineteenth century tourism moving along the Rhine, alert for the moment to board.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like everyone is waiting and they are a bit crowded together. On top I see ladies with huge skirts like cakes, gentlemen with tall hats and people with suitcases everywhere. There is a big carriage wheel and people sitting on the ground as if they were tired. Below there is a carriage with two horses and a man driving, and a little flag flying on a boat. I like that everything is drawn with quick little lines that look like they are moving.
