What you would seeLo que verías

This is a black-and-white lithograph seen from a slightly elevated dock. In the immediate foreground, a pale strip of stone runs along the bottom edge, with two small bollards and, at lower center, three short vertical marks. At left, a moored sailboat angles diagonally into the scene, showing its deck, a tall mast, fine rigging lines, a furled sail, baskets, and a standing figure in a hat at work; the letters “ET” can be read on its hull. Beside it, a similar unoccupied boat has a central mast and a light canvas spread in triangular folds across its deck. The water between them is drawn with thousands of short strokes and dots that create sparkle, shadow, and movement. In the middle ground at right, a shaded pier holds two small boats, a square floating structure, and two men in hats: one stands in a small boat while the other hauls a vessel at the water's edge. Farther out floats a larger motorboat with a cabin and canopy. In the background, the bright bay opens between white arcaded buildings at left and enormous faceted cliffs hatched in grays. The sky, lightly shaded only in the upper right corner, lets the orderly, luminous scene breathe.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the two sailboats in the foreground and follow their masts upward toward the cliffs. Then look to the right-hand dock: the small human figures, barely larger than the baskets and bollards, quietly reveal the true scale of the bay.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, *Capri I* is a lithograph by Ernest Thurn (American, 1889–1971), held in the museum's Prints department as part of the Mr. and Mrs. Charles G. Prasse Collection. The source dates it broadly to 1904–51 and provides no further description, so the exact year and circumstances of its making are unknown. Its title refers to Capri, the Italian island in the Gulf of Naples known for its steep cliffs, small harbors, and fishing and pleasure boats — motifs that structure this image. The edition number, title, and artist's signature are handwritten along the lower margin.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: the artist hides his initials, “ET,” painted on the hull of the boat at lower left, while his full signature appears again in pencil at the bottom right corner of the sheet.

  1. How does the scene change if we imagine the sounds and smells of a working harbor instead of this silent image?¿Cómo cambia la escena si, en lugar de esta imagen silenciosa, imaginamos los sonidos y olores de un puerto en plena faena?
  2. Why might the artist have left the two foreground boats empty or nearly empty while placing all the activity at the edges?¿Por qué el artista habrá dejado vacías, o casi, las dos barcas del frente y colocado toda la actividad en los bordes?
  3. What does the contrast between the tiny human figures and the immense cliffs suggest about life in this place?¿Qué sugiere el contraste entre las figuritas humanas y los acantilados inmensos sobre la vida en este lugar?

I focus on how Ernest Thurn built this black and white lithograph using only patterns of marks. Below, the pale strip of the pier with its two bollards contrasts with water made of thousands of short strokes and dots that suggest sparkle and movement. On the left, the boat with the letters ET on its hull shows thin ropes, a furled sail and baskets, all resolved with precise lines. I notice how black is reserved for shadows on the right-side pier and the faceted cliffs in the background, letting the paper itself breathe as sky and bay.

I look at this elevated harbor view as if it were a night map in negative. The stippled water reminds me of a star field, with constellations of highlights between the two sailboats in the foreground. On the right, the shaded pier with its two hatted men feels like a coastal observatory, and the cabin launch in the middle is like a planet in transit. In the distance, the hatched cliffs and arcaded buildings frame the pale bay like a horizon that leaves the sky almost empty, perfect for imagining light.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I love searching for things in this harbor! At the bottom there is a light-colored pier with three little lines and two bollards like buttons. On the left there is a boat with a person wearing a hat who seems to be tidying baskets and on its hull it says ET, like someone's initials. Next to it there is another boat with a little triangular tarp to make shade. The water is full of shiny dots and on the right there are two men pulling small boats. Far away you can see little white houses and huge striped mountains.

  1. #1

On the hull of the boat on the left, what letters can you read?

    HintPista

Look at the closest boat with the hatted figure, right on its dark side near the water.

  2. #2

At the bottom, on the pale pier strip, how many small bollards can you see?

    HintPista

Search in the foreground, on the pale stone that crosses the lower part of the image.

  3. #3

On the shaded pier on the right, how many hatted men are working with the boats?

    HintPista

Look at the right shore where there are small boats and a square floating structure.
