What holds my attention is the yellowed paper and how the black ink still bites so sharply. Look at the thin rectangular border that frames everything, as if protecting the angel. I notice the hatching: parallel and crossed lines that create shadow in the folds of the mantle and give volume without color. The hair in spiraled curls and the two wings with scaly feathers on top and long feathers below show how much texture can be achieved just by engraving lines. Below, the monogram M + S remains crisp.

This angel looks like it is floating even though it is standing. It has two huge wings with lots of little feathers and hair full of curls like springs falling onto its shoulders. It wears a small crown with a tiny cross and a dress that moves a lot, with many dark wrinkles. It is barefoot and you can see its little toes. In one hand it holds a long staff with a flower on top and a ribbon that flies with nothing written on it. With the other hand it waves. At the bottom it says M + S.
